I was changing my fuel filter today and drained the bowl to clean brown sludge out. I noticed there is significant pitting of the bowl bottom in 2 or 3 places. -mad

Has anyone seen this kind of thing before? How quickly is it likely to require replacement? What would be the best and least expensive repair/replacement?

Thanks for the help!

yep you got corrosion, had some water in there (doesnt take much)
how long till it eats through ????
if the deepest pit is over 75% thickness gone , i would go looking for a new one, looks like the factory protective coating is gone or washed away from fuel, bio etc.
the brown sludge is a perfect hiding breeding ground for corrosion
you had a concentration cell, air and water trapped by the fuel and sludge, it was a free for all of alum eating bugs.

how many miles is on her now? my 92 we got 100k before wiring started to break down and a fuel bowl,

Hey Peter,
I noticed that on mine about a year ago or so. I used JB Weld on it. I let it dry over the weekend and then re-installed the fuel bowl. No problems since then.

well I didnt think to feel the pits but one was fairly deep I think. The smaller one. Great. I know those things arent cheap. I only have 91k. I think that brown sludge was gunk from the fuel system that the bio finally broke free. I replaced the filter a couple months ago and it looked like a mud bog in there.

I cleaned it out thoroughly last time and again today. Guess I'll have to keep an eye on that.

If/when I have to replace it, would there be any advantage to going to one of those systems that loses the bowl? And by advantage, I mean worth the extra costs given I do not race nor plan to do things like injectors or turbo upgrades.

Craig - will bio or #2 not have any affect on the JB?

I have this for part numbers:

F4TZ-9155-B (engine serial no. 201680-before)
F6TZ-9155-A (engine serial no. 201681-up to 98.5)

The second one doesnt come up on any parts site. Is there another or is this incorrect?

Thanks

I found out about mine the hard way when it ate all the way through. Went from a little trickle on Friday to a leak so bad you could track me around town on Sunday. Wasn't cheap to replace either. Now I drain my bowl all the time just in case.

 Holy cow! You've had some water in there for sure.

Two months ago you had sludge in the bottom of the bowl and now you do again? Only time I've gotten sludge in the bottom of mine was when I got a load of bad fuel. Well also when the Dahl heater came apart. I would look in the bottom of your bio storage cans to make sure all the wash water is out of it. Or you guys have dirty #2 down there. I get about 2 tbspns. a week out of my 900FH drain a week. Never got anything out of the stocker before and don't now either.

Not sure what bio would do to JB weld.:dunno Guess you could let some set up in a can then pour some bio in it to see what it does. Only prob with that is that the filter bowl is under pressure and that could possibly change the out come.

It hasn't done anything to the JB Weld that I can tell. I kept an eye on my filters when I started running B-100, when I did filter changes I looked in the bottom and the Jb Weld seemed to be holding up fine. Now for the legal fine print "Results may vary":D

When this fuel pump goes I am going to switch over to the electric fuel pump system, that Rich in Nebraska has mentioned.

well I got an email from Dale at Tymar and he can do the complete stock bowl and the attachments for about 310$ so I'll just stick with stock when the time comes. Later than sooner I hope.

Antonio - I am beginning to think the sludge is the stuff the bio has broken free from the system. I never had it previously so guess that is as likely as anything. The sludge this time was WAY less than last. If that is what it was it makes sense. Last time a huge load breaks free and this time I have the remnants. I'll check my cans though. I just emptied one last night.

Kind of interesting my water in fuel light has not come on. Hope there isnt an issue there too. Im gonna hold on as long as I can. No leaks at this point so maybe more frequent filter checks will help me hold out.

No WIF light? Weird...how deep was the sludge in the bottom? Did it contact the sensor? The only problem I have with the sludge being from trash coming loose is that water caused the pitting. If it was just junk being cleaned by the bio there would be no water.

last time, deep; this time not bad but covered probably 75% of the bottom. It wasnt uniform though. Kind of piled in some places. The filter itself wasnt too bad. Just had a small ring around the bottom.

I guess I need to watch my bio a little more.
