Those modules can be tough. I don't know about GM's, but Ford's modules back in the 70's and 80's were square boxes mounted on the fender well. A way to "jumpstart" them was to pour cold water directly on the box and the car would restart so you could drive it to a safer location or to a parts store.
the good old DuraSpark module..
best way to prove it bad was to replace everything else and then the module if it still wouldn't run/ran bad.
