f350 wont start

i just bought a 2006 f350 dually with 112,000 miles. Its not running and i dont know what happened to it. I think its not getting fuel. i charged up the batteries and had them tested. when i turn the key in the on position the fuel gauge works for only a sec and then the needle drops all the way down. Im not too familiar with diesel engines, is there anywhere i can spray starting fluid to see if it will turn over? Any help would be great. thanks

Don't spray Starting Fluid in this engine. It uses glow plugs that can ignite the Starting Fluid and cause a BIG BANG. What happens when you turn it to START? Have you changed the fuel filters (two of them)? Tell us more.

so i brought it to ford and they told me there was no compression, headgasket blown, and there was no coolant. They told me it was overheated too much and needs to be replaced. $9k. I think im going to pull the heads off and take a look. This is my first time in a diesel motor, if anyone has links for any tips or anything that will help me, feel free to send them. Im going to pick it up tomorrow and see if i can get them to give me anymore info. I feel like they might be trying to screw me.

How long you had it, sounds like someone sold you a good truck with a bad
engine. As bad as it sounds $9000 is not a bad price for a new engine and it would
most likely cost you $12000 to drive it out of the shop.
Ford pulls the cab off of the truck to work on the engine, and that's a lot of labor.
You can pull the engine yourself by dropping the transmission first.

I read online somewhere that the easiest way to remove heads is to remove the cab. Has anyone done this before? I was going to pull the whole motor out. But now im thinking to take the cab off doesnt seem to hard.

That sounds like the cost of a new crate motor.

Does it really need a whole new motor?
