I do believe that we are going to see a light duty 1/2 ton version sooner or later by several of the auto MFG's. The market wants it, plain and simple. When it will come? Good question! I believe that we will continue to stumble up against EPA issues.

chevy already screwed it up in early 80's

overseas there are tons of good oil burners running around.

Back in the early 80's as a kid I had a part time summer job at an auto parts store and they must have had 12 of the Diesel Isuzu pups for deliveries, they ran and ran, they also spewed black smoke when you got on it:D :D :roflmao

You are correct that so far, the EPA has had a strangle hold on diesel engines under 8,000 pounds gross, making it technically more expensive to build a truck under 8K in a diesel than to build a truck OVER 8K in a diesel. The over 8K cost upgrade was already 5K. The under 8K cost upgrade would have been 7-8K, IMHO, making it unfeasible for the US market (in their opinion) because no one would buy one at 8K markups. (This is their logic, from what I've heard, not mine. The Liberty CRD was only like a 3K option, so I think it was just an excuse, myself...)

Anyway, NOW, the EPA has a stranglehold on ALL diesels, no matter the gross weight. So, it is technically just as feasible to release a light diesel as it is a heavy diesel. However, it is more expensive to do both.

We will see if this results in the death of diesel in the US, or if it opens doors for diesels. It could go either way...
