This type of brake uses the existing EPBV, by wiring into the wiring. The brake has been running great for 6 years now on my 2000 PSD F250.

I used to pull a 26' TT and this exhaust brake in the mountains took a load off my regular trucks' brakes. We sold to 26' trailer (due to high fuel costs), and now have a light weight popup camper, and tow a 14' enclosed m/c trailer.

OK,

I wired up the DIY exhaust brake using the instructions Crumm provided and the EBPV and all I got was a "Service Engine Soon" light. There appears to be no braking in either position of the switch. The indicator lights come on but no breaking effect. Is there any way to see if the EBPR is closing?

You should be able to hear the whoosh sound when it is closed. Very noticeable sound. The SES light comes on in some trucks and doesn't in others. You can install a back pressure sensor dongle from SP Diesel to keep the light off.

This might be dumb, but I am young, so please help me out

What does an exhaust brake do exactly?

Creates back pressure in the exhaust to increase the compression braking effect of the engine so you can slow down without using the brakes. Have you ever heard of a "Jake Brake" on a big truck? Does the same thing but does it by closing off the exhaust pipe rather than closing the valves in the head.

Ahhh, thanks for clearing that up, I've wondered that for the longest time :thanks

:thumbs The DIY brake finally works!!! It is amazing what happens when you wire to the EPR rather than to the Charge air temp sensor!!

After some failures due to my stupidity, I am happy to say that the brake actually works. I have only tried it running empty but I will be towing my 33 foot fifth wheel in two weeks and should have a good idea how it functions. Running empty it is very strong at 2500-3000 RPM, decreasing in braking power from there down, but for about $20 (vs $700-$1200 for add on aftermarket) I think it is very worthwile (plus the red and green mini LEDs are cool). Has anyone heard any problems associated with using this setup or have any wisdom of what not to do? Is there anything that can hurt the engine if this is used reasonably? Any electronic wizards out there know how to wire a circuit into this so that stepping on the accelerator cancels the brake function?

Thanks Crumm for passing on the instructions; I had seen them before somewhere but they were incomplete. The hardest part was finding the EPR tucked away out of sight as it is.

Now on to the next mod! Nitrous maybe??????
