would i be a fool to swap a 5.8l gas for a 7.3l powerstroke? Really have considered doing it, but dont know if it is worth the time and money. Any thoughts?

That swap makes no sense to me. You would be better off dollar wise to fix the 7.3 and keep it. All of the fuel and electronic computers would have to be changed - big hassle.

I agree with Dave. But if you're dead set against it, I'll buy your 7.3 if it's repairable, and you want a reasonable ammount for it.

It can be done but you need a WHOLE complete donor truck that the PSD came out of. You'll need PCM,IDM,all the chassis/tranny sensors etc etc....... Its ALOT of work but can be done. Depends on the depth your pocketbook and if doing a project like this turns your crank. Some guys like to do things just because they can. :sweet

Hmm, maybe I am reading this wrong....
Swap (trade away, get ride of, dump, trash, put in river taping a quarter to it so you can say you threw something away) a 5.8l for a (obtain, get, replace with) 7.3l.

If you read this wrong i mean get a donar truck get rid of the 5.8 in my truck and put in the 7.3 sorry about the confusing wording. I would like to get better fuel economy and torque. A guy i work with has a 96 7.3 psd has 380,000 miles on it and gave out. Still ran but weak he tried to lock it up but it wouldn't go. He put in brand new psd and turbo got 22 mpg and 18 mpg with 23 foot car hauler.

Can it be done? Yes Is it cost effective? No

If you are attached to the 97' and just want a project then go for it. If you just want a 97' PSD then sell the one with the 5.8 and buy a good used one with a PSD.
