I just performed my first oil change and everything went well until I cranked it. The engine started up fine but started to lope for about 5 seconds then started running fine. Is this normal?

It is air in the High Pressure Oil Pump (HPOP). This will work it self out in a few starts. Drive it and don't baby it.

on my 97 350, i was told to prefill the filter. Is this necessary, and why?

I've never pre-filled a filter on anything in my entire life, this includes agricultural machinery, big rigs, industrial machinery, cars, motorcycles all the way down to lawn mowers.

Some guys are religious about it, I havent seen the proof or need to do it.

No, it will not hurt to prefill the filter. I will do it if I can put it back on, without spilling it all over the place.
