So......I have a bunch of 0W-40 Mobile One in my garage that work "donated"
to me:D ....anyway...It's synthetic....can I use that in my truck it's "CF" approved...I have been running Rotella T 15W-40 with a K&N filter...and I dont have to change the oil in my Audi (it takes that stuff) for a while yet.....but i really need to change the oil in my truck.....
Thanks,
Carl

well if its diesel rated you can use it BUT i wouldnt use a synthetic oil if you payed me!!!!seen too many perfectly good engines go boom shortly after switching.

a friend of mine was using synthetic in all 3 of his tow trucks.all 3 pissed oil so bad they would go through 2 gallons a day wich gets very expensive.so after chatting with some other mechanics to make sure it was safe to go back to dino oil i switched all 3 back to rotella dino oil.and guess what,2 of the3 stopped pissing oil and now only leak about a quart a week.the 3rd need a gasket replaced on the back of the block.

If it were me and the Rotella has been working good in the PSD I would save the Mobile for the Audi when she is ready for a change.

I dont want to seem insensitive

But

synthetic oils back when they first where introduced to the public, did have some issuses of oil leaks, not so much from the oils as it was from all the dirt and crap they we had in our engines. Remember this was the mid 70's cars ran dirty, werent as reliable or built to the higher tolerances of todays modern engines.

synthetics had such great lubricity and cleaning properties that they washed out all the gunk that was stopping all them weird leaks, so when engines, especially those of questionable preventive maintenance history started leaking and making messes , of course the culprit was synthetic oil. B.S.
yes there where cases of some seals being of a compound that reacted to the syn oils, but that was mainly due to the gunk drying them out and then the new cleaner oil exposing the dried weakness in the seals,
also those dried up seals couldnt handle the the slipperyness (new word) of synthetic oils so the wiping action on shafts and actuators was less than perfect and again we had leakage.

as far as running syn in a psd.... I ran it in my 92 IDI for 110k of its 118k miles
ran cooler and smoother mpg up from 13 to 14,
but th eoil still got chaged at 5k no matter what got $$$
the 02 7.3 ran delo or rotella all of her life after the first oil change, 10k each

the 06 rotella and 6k on each oil change, its just to $$ to change synthetics at 6k miles, maybe soon i will shift to syn when i go to extended oil change intervals of 10k

syn oil is by far a superior lubricant, but it all goes back to preventivie maintenance, dont expcet a 120k mile engine with oil change intervals of 5k or 30k or "whenever I remember (sisiter in law)" not to have issues if you change to synthetic oil, shoot a good dino oil will cause problems in that engine
we have used it in turbine engines for many many years.
used it in hyd pumps no isssues..
I climb off the soap box and return you to our regulary scheduled forum :D

I do not know about the weight of the oil, but I do have an opinion on synthetic oil. I will not discount the qualities of synthetic lubricants, but, IMHO, if you are not interested in extended drain intervals and do not have a bypass oil filter then synthetics are not necessary. A good quality syn oil changed every 5K is just as good as a high quality dino changed every 5K, IMHO. :puts Flame Suit on:;) -popcorn

Well I dont have any problem with syn or dino.....its just at work all the cars( Ferrari, Maserati, Aston Martin, Bentley, and Rolls-Royce) run dino, but all the newer cars run syn..(any turbo car gets syn no matter what year it is)..so I have a bunch of syn that I end "borrowing" from work.....
..Honestly my truck in all it's 136k has had the engine changed at every 3k miles....it's just a habit I'm in....sometimes even less.....:D

I started to run syn oil because of the romps in the cold mornings. My truck would romp romp romp before it settled down to a nice idle. I tried syn oil to see if it would cure the romps, and it did. No fancy bypass filters and no long oil change intervals, just syn oil.

.

ok tell that to my buddies 01 international that came from the factory with synthetic oil and his 98 gmc 7500 that had synthetic in it from its very first oil change when it was new,he has all reciepts for every part, oil and filter replaced on this truck from the previous owners.i put rotella in both trucks a few weeks ago and the oil leaks are almost gone and thier fuel mileage actually went up.

Add "and don't live in a cold climate" to that and I will agree. I run synthetic and change it every 5000 miles. The reason for me using it is 1. dino does not flow well at -40 and 2. the synthetic does! One good side effect is the engine is a little quieter with it.

Back to the original question. "0W-40 Mobile One" I would say no. The Mobil one oil that is the proper rating for our trucks is 5W-40. 0W-40 sounds like oil for a gas rig to me but it may be some sort of multi-use oil?
