I'm going to be looking at a friends 02 F-250 4x4 and I wanted to do some homework first.

Here's the issue......

When the headlights are on the reverse lights come on. Only the headlights do this, not the tail lights. When I hit the high beams the reverse lights go off.

Any thoughts of a common problem? I was thinking something with a trailer harness?

Thanks in advance

How are you turning the headlights on without turning the taillights on? Did you pull the fuse or something?
You may be right on the trailer harness, it would be possible anyways. Was the trailer plug just changed or something repaired? Or did the problem just start for no apparent reason?

Do they stay on when the truck is put in reverse or go out? This is fairly confusing.

There is no connection between the Head Light Switch and the Reversing lights. So That would indicate a short between the 2 circuits.
To make sure the power is coming from another source than the reversing circuit pull fuse F2.8. That is the fuse that normally supplies current to the rev. light through the rev light relay in the Centeral Junction Box.. If the light still come on they are being feed from another circuit most likely 2 wires crossed.

The rev. light relay is controlled by the PCM power relay, again on the Central Junction Box. If that relay saw voltage from anything other than the Ignition Sw. it would pull in and in turn pull in the rev.light relay.

No marker lights with head lights on is not right, only two thing that make that happen high beam switch or head light switch. The high beams are with the multi switch, witch is in the steering column and my have other things pluged in to it also. And if the marker light are not on with the head light then the head light switch is bad. Check all the fuses, brakers and relays too.
