Whats the egr? where is it? How does it cause issues? Trying to learn.
i know it can somehow be deleted? why would you? why wouldn't you?

It's mainly the EGR cooler that causes problems, and also the EGR valve, it recirculates some of your exhaust back through the engine, and in the cooler it is cooled by coolant before being re-intorduced to the engine.

The problem with the cooler, is that when you are under hard excelleration, or any time your EGT's get kinda high, you get the 1200 degree or higher exhaust gasses going through it to be cooled by a small amount of coolant, well as you can imagine with that much heat going in about the only thing that happens, is that the coolant get's flash boiled, causing what is known as puking, and your cooling system will overflow out of your Degaus bottle.

It is really quite inefficient, as the coolant passes through the oil cooler right before going into the EGR cooler, so it's hot already.

The easiest way to delete is to get a block off plate, that blocks the exhaust gasses from entering into the cooler to start with, (WARNING, this can cause some trucks to throw DTC codes, this condition can be eliminated with some custom SCT tunes, by Tadd, or others) You can also get a new upipe that deletes the inlet to the EGR cooler, or the best overall, and most $$$$ is to completely eliminate the cooler and remove it from the truck.

hope that helps, sorry for the long post.

so you are saying that the egr valve opens and allows the hot gases to go out of it, then into the cooler, which is supposed to cool it? does this hot air then go thru the turbo and out the exhaust?
if you block off the egr valve, i guess removing it? where does this hot air go now? straight to the turbo and out? is the egr just supposed to cool some of the air? no way can it all go thru it? it would seem to be a small portion of air then it would come back and mix with the hotter air?(assuming it actually got cooled?)
then flow thru the system? If eliminated it all goes thru its normal course to turbo and out?
so why, would it be a big deal if totally clogged?
wouldnt that do basically the same as using a block off plug?
why do we want this on the motor? In my hot rod days i eliminated the egr cause i did not want to reburn the hot air? in this case it seems as if its done just to cool some air to lower air temps?
does it return pre or post turbo? i assume pre??
thanks

yes the egr valve does open (and close)...the hot exhaust gases
circulate thru the egr cooler (next to the coolant passages which
is supposed to cool the exhaust gasses....once cooled the exhaust gasses
are RECIRCULATED to the cylinders for "reburn"

YOU dont necessarily want it but the EPA does...they want it on
EVERY motor (gassers too...it works better on gas cars/trucks
cause the exhaust isnt full of soot)...imo it was poorly thought out...
cooled sooty fumes make for a STICKY mess.

the problem w/ disconnecting the egr valve is that other components
depend on its positioning and expect to see a change/results when the
open or close is changed...the egr valve doesnt work ALONE...

heres a couple of good pics/diagram of how the egr circulates exhaust gasses in our 6.0L

this photo (below) shows the actual egr cooler (the cooler is
next to the silver u-shaped "manifold")

ps60_038_Air_Management_System.jpg

and heres a FLOW diagram....which will give you an idea of
some of the integrated sensors & solinoids that are "in the flow"....

ps60_032_Air_Management_System.jpg

the problem w/ letting it CLOG is that the computer is still trying to
open & close it...which also impacts other components (in the exhaust
stream)

a failing egr valve will result in commanding other components
to actuate inappropriately...in particular the VGT...which is usally
why folks notice a BUCKING when the egr valve is "bad"

thanks for the respons, but i cant open the pics??
if one was to block this off, i clearly assume a reprogram would be needed?
i know theres a plate to block off at the pipe? if you do would all else go haywire?

you shouldnt have to open the pics....theyre referenced in the post
and should display as part of the posting....if theyre blocked youve got
some firewall issue.

heres the pic links in order (in a shortened version...but they shouldnt
work for you either...try 'em let me know)

if you block off or disconnect the egr valve & cooler the results
will be at a minimum OBD2 codes stored & if its a california based
truck youll get the CEL/MIL light turned on.

eventually you could see drivablity issues (erratic boost & higher egt's).

blocking it off or disconnecting the valve is only PART of the steps that it
would take to eliminate it....keep it clean & keep the performance mods
to a minimum and youll likely never have a problem.

consider that some have disconnected the egr valve (via the plug or
software) yet coolant & exhaust still circulate ...then they increase the
fuel & boost (raising pressures & temps)...coupled w/ possible
reduction in coolant flow (from plugged oil coolers) its not necessarily
surprising that the egr coolers have crack....its a failure demanding
of an expensive repair.

i know everyone thinks it should be EASY to just add some more fuel
and boost on these trucks...but the cause and effect can be far
reaching...and you better be prepared to foot the bill for the repairs
if you make the performance mods.

how would an oil cooler get plugged?
thanks for all the time. What does the egr do with oil cooler? i know the exhaust circulates thru a cooler but dont follow on how the oil would plug?

Page 18: Cooling System

ps60_018_Cooling_System.jpg

the oil cooler sits under the filter housing on top of the engine,
the oil cooler has coolant (water) circulated thru it to cool the oil...
the oil cooler is in the coolant flow just PRIOR to the coolant flowing
to the EGR cooler.

its suspected that either the casting and/or stop leak left behind/added
during production could be causeing blockage in the oil cooler (coolant
flow)...if flow is reduced or blocked at the oil cooler then the egr cooler
wont be getting enough "coolant" and could cause the egr cooler to
be subjected to higher temps (lack of cooling) and may be a contributing
factor/cause of CRACKED egr coolers.

its also why i recommend a coolant filter...get that casting/sand &/or
factory stop leak outta that motor as soon as you can...

ive never been able to put my finger on it (mostly cause i dont trust
many dealers) but generally from what i can tell those that have
mod'd trucks and are NOT running a coolant filter have had to replace
their egr coolers (some more than once....which i suspect is do in
part because the mechanic didnt look at or replace the oil cooler).

again a LOT of this is speculation on my part.

my truck has 67k trouble free miles, no real performace mods
(other than a turbo back cat delete mbrp exhaust)...and im running
a coolant filter.

dont buy a coolant filter unless you want too....to me its
cheap insurance (and if nothing else in a best case scenario it
MIGHT extend the life of my water pump....worst case scenario
it MIGHT extend the life of my egr cooler and oil cooler)

oil and egr cooler? same part? if one brakes both are replaced?
also you mean that if egr gets a block off plate, the fumes with not flow?
how would that cause any thing to get hotter? The hot air wont get out?
if it does not get out new hotter air cant get in? I guess, i dont see how
shutting off the egr would increase temps? I see the egt? but a muffler will fix that(should) i just dont get how coolant flow could get clogged if egr is shut or removed(blocked)
