EBPV question

The only mod has been a K&N air filter.

Took the day off because of inclement weather and made a discovery. While letting the truck warm up to defrost the windows, the hissing noise came back while on high idle (1000 RPM). While it was doing it's eratic hissing, I popped the hood and looked at both actuator arms for the wastegate and EBPV. The waste gate was not moving. The EBPV was in perfect sync with the noise. It would move out, noise was there, it moved in, noise would stop.

I think it's safe to say that's the culprit. Now to find the underlying cause.

K&N filters do not filter very well. They are performance filters and they have low restriction, and low filtration. Low filtration means they let the finer particles of dirt and dust through. If you want a performance filter, try AFE.

You might be on to something.

Engine off. Try pulling every connector you can get to under the hood. Look for oil, corrosion and good connections. Do a wiggle check as you put things back together. Sounds like a sensor is either Shot or a bad, intermittent connection.

The EBPV sensor.. would be my SWAG.. from 2900 miles away. Try unplugging it yet ? Or at the Y pipe ??

The K&N wasn't my addition, It was the PO before he passed. Not so much into performance as reliability.

haven't pulled the connector from the sensor yet, with wind chills at -15*, not a good day to work under the hood. When I do I'll let you all know how it goes.

there are 2 wires coming out of the ebpv actuator, follow them to the 2 wire connector that's where you could unplug it. Does it completely solve the problem? ...no, but it stops it for now. and a lot of guys unplug the b/c they are annoying anyway, just personal preference.

Finally had a chance to do the boost test. all looks normal. idle 0 psi, normal accel about 4 psi, cruising steady at 65 5 psi, pulling grade with heavy accel almost 18 psi and most inportantly no needle flutter other then vibration from the truck. So this weekend since I'm due for a fuel filter change, I'll check the back pressure sensor and tube. If its all good the EBPV is getting unhooked.

The main function of the EBPV is to (supposedly) ensure a faster warm up (EPA driven) by putting back pressure on the exhaust, so as D P R N kinda sez: It's a personal preference... Hooked up.. or Unhooked.

1. get rid of K&N filter. do the AIS filter or the DIY canister one instead.

2. how are you pressurizing the system and determining no leaks. you ARE going to have air leaks when you pressurize the system. the thing is to identify where they are.

you have the turbo which is always going to be loosing air/spinning. you are going to have open valves.

its does not have to be much pressure to find the leaks.

3. you are not going to build boost just driving around. you will ONLY build boost if you are loaded and heavy and the truck is working. you are not going to do it rolling into acceleration.

4. the EBPV kicks in around 40 degrees. its a function of air temp, coolant temp and iirc, fuel temps. its not and EPA only thing. it helps the truck warm up by putting load on the motor.

5. the biggest culprit of air leaks is the accumulation of oil at the coupled joints and it weeping into the connections. and the boots are NOT oil resistant. they will break down over time.

A bit of a difference of opinion and wording but... What dp sez.

Your [boost needle bounceing] would be an indicator of something in the I/C charge system leaking.. not the road surface feedback, In My Opinion.
