As far as if your DMFW is going out, you can check for play in the flywheel... with it in neutral (e-brake on), pull the inspection cover at the bottom of the tranny and see how much you can rotate the flywheel side to side by hand.
I can't recall what spec I heard Ford changes it at (maybe 5/8"?) but I had I think over a full inch of play in mine. Not too much noise at idle, but when I shut it down.... huggarackatackaladatackalacktatck-clunk.
What kinda noise when you let out the clutch? A pop or creaking from the tranny? If it is it is probably the clutch fork (like a $17 part off powerstrokeshop.com)... I went through that myself a while back. -popcorn When I let out the pedal slowly I could sorta feel it in the pedal, it almost felt like a notch it slid/bumped over on the way out. If you think it's that let me know and I'll dig up my old post from the dark side. Lots of info in that one.
