Helping a guy at work replace his oil pan on his 96 cc dually 2wd stick. with that said i have a few questions

1) is there any thing else that should be replace while the whole motor is pulled (already replacing steering box, starter, PS lines)
2) is it true that the 7.3 oil pans have an average life of 10 years then the rot out? (guy at ford knew P# off top of his head, said after 10 years they all rot out.)
3) any problem we should expect to run in to while pulling the motor & trans to get to the oil pan.
4) if we got a reuseable gasket from ford (for 99 and up 7.3's) will that work with the 96 setup or do we need the old style gasket?

:thanks

you do know you have to yank the engine to replace the pan?

I think he does ;)

The only thing I would suggest is to have some cleaning supply's on hand. Much easier to clean up the engine bay with no engine in the way..

yup he found out the whole motor had to be yanked when he was getting quotes from everywhere around and they all estimated minimum 8 hour labor. thats why he decided to do it himself. when i found out his truck had a powerstroke, i asked if he needed any help (its always nice to know for the future). thanks guys

Use the correct sealer for the gasket. There is no oil pan gasket actually. It is international part number 442 sealer. You will think the old pan is welded on the engine, it is a bear to get off.
If he does not have a down pipe, consider beating the crap out of the fire wall so when he adds one, its done.
