I have a med-high pitch whine from 55-65 mph only when on the throttle. The whine immediately stops when I let off or am above or below those speeds.

There are no other sounds at any other speeds or throttle positions.

I'm thinking the rear ring gear needs to be re-shimmed.

Anyone else have an opinion?

Check the carrier bearing on the driveshaft. They tend to make noise prior to self destructing. Just changed one on a 99 F250 gas job. Make sure there is no load on the shaft, nuetral chocked wheels or on stands, check play up/down and left/right. Auto Zone has Ancor replacements for under $40. Good luck

I thought about that and had a new carrier bearing as well as new u-joints installed about a year ago with no change to the problem.

I failed to mention in my original post that the truck has made the noise since the day I bought it. I've put almost 100k miles on it since then.

I hear some noise and feel it in my feet as a passanger in my 99. I swear its the transfer case bearings somehow. Has a clunk too.
