We have many part-time residents of the beachfront communities here who are dead set against offshore drilling. Their reasoning? They would see the drilling rigs located 25 miles offshore! That is below the horizon! They also say the beaches of Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi are proof that "the beaches will be ruined!" Funny, there are rigs operating off of Alabama's coast, and I challenge you to get a room in Gulf Shores during the tourist season. The beaches are pristine.
It is my firm belief that there are political forces at work who are determined to keep the American public paying high fuel prices. Their objective is to ban RVs, SUVs, big diesel pickups, and other "gas guzzlers". They will not be satisfied until everyone is driving a Smart Car, a Prius, riding a bicycle, or walking everywhere. On other forums, I am taken to task for my choice of vehicle. I am chided to use mass transit.
The very limited mass transit resources here do not go where I need to go, and the nearest bus stop is nine miles away. Amtrak pulled out after Katrina, Greyhound pulled out three years ago.
Most of these self appointed guardians of the nation's energy use live in big cities where you can catch a train, a bus, a subway, or other mass transit . Those of us in the hinterlands don't have those options.
Meanwhile, I've parked the truck and the fiver. Nearly $5 diesel is beyond my budget.
If I were the governor of Florida, you couldn't get the drilling started in the Destin Dome fast enough to suit me. The PITA snowbirds and the environmental lobby be damned.
