I am getting close to 10k miles on my 05 X and the water in fuel light has never come one.

I am about to do my next oil change and I figured while I was under there I would drain the HFCM.

How much do I drain out? Do I let it drain until it stops or will this eventually drain my whole diesel tank?

I have the International screw in plug ready to go also.

once you pull the plug let it finish doing its business. about a pint or so.
some have said if your parked at an angle it will drain the tank. so far in my exploits this has been proved false for me, and i have drained it in some weird positions along the highway.
and yes you will get a fresh shower of fuel no matter how you remove the plug or the new knurled nut drain plug. the only way to ensure you dont get a diesel fuel bath is...

A. Have someone else do it
B. Invert the truck

I just did my on my 05 6.0 - what an experience. Fortunately I bought a new plug to replace the cheap brass one that comes stock - I ended up stripping it out. Once I got it out, only about a cup of fuel came out - but quite a bit of particulant matter....It took only minutes (once the original plug was out), and I think it can only help.

Its a good habit to drain the HFCM every oil change. And the more you remove, the less chance of getting the plug seized. A little grease on the O-ring goes a long way towards getting it out in the future. I have found that if you back the truck up a sturdy set of ramps [elevating the rear] and remove the fuel cap prior to draining, its alot less messy. The same method works well for changing out the fuel filter. But, thats just me. Results may vary.
