i have done my share of experimenting.
i will try to keep it short.
if you see something your interested in that i have touched on,
you can ask me about it.
first things first, i think Ford screwed us with the 08.
They told us these engines would be more economical than the 6.0
They lied big time.
If your going to keep the particulate filter on, get an EGT gauge.
Another mistake that was made, is that you can shut your truck off while its in re-gen.
When your truck is in re-gen, EGTs are 1100 plus degrees.
This is way to hot for the turbo bearings to shut down.
They should have designed it so that you can get out of your truck, and the truck would run until out of re-gen, and at a safe temperature before shutting down.
Stock, my F250 FWD Crew Cab Long Bed got 11-13 mpg empty.
8 mpg hauling 8,000 lbs. This was not expected at all.
I put a MBRP 5 inch DPF back exhaust on.
This did nothing for fuel economy, but EGTs went down 100 degrees, and you could tell an exhaust flow difference.
Then, i installed a S&B intake. I gained no more than a mile per gallon.
Definitely, better airflow.
I had to bring it to the dealer twice, because of DPF issues.
I bought a SuperChips flash pack with re-gen delete installed by Mike at KEM Performance.
I made my own DPF delete pipe.
I am a machinist, so making this pipe was not hard.
And yes, bungs do have to be installed for the sensors, without the sensors, the truck will go into limp-mode.
I started out with the Tow Program, 55 to 60 horsepower.
This definitely made a big difference.
Threw a sun coast converter in, and now i run on performance mode full time.
Around 120 extra horsepower.
I get around 10-12 mpg plus 10,000 lbs towing.
I average 14-15 mpg, city and highway mixed.
I get around 18 mpg, without towing, on the highway.
i've got over 45,000 miles on my truck, and around 30,000 with the super chips program in it.
i've never had an engine light come on, since the truck has been re-programmed.
As far as I'm concerned, manufacturer's installing DPFs is like the 70's when installing cats.
They have to work the bugs out.
All the manufacturers are having problems.
The best way to solve the problem is to get rid of the DPF.
I think it is a bunch of bull that trying to make cleaner emissions has to cost us 5 to 6 miles per gallon, especially when fuel costs 4-5$ per gallon.
I tell everyone that i am fighting terrorism by raising the fuel economy on my truck.
Now there's no trips to the dealers or engine light problems.
Since i have installed the performance program, i got rid of the cat.
I am now running 5 inch from the down pipe all the way back, with an NBRP performance muffler.
This motor kicks ass, without all that emission crap on it.
I am now thinking about selling my super chips flash pack and picking up a spartan programmer.
They are very pricey, but they also add EGR delete, which will give me longer engine life and cooler EGTs.
Its amazing how fast the oil gets dirty, because of the EGR valve.
I also recommend all you guys running these after-market intakes, if you want to run your engines for a lot of miles, exchange your filter for a Amsoil nano fiber filter.
They clean the air better than stock.
All those after market filters dont clean the air for crap.
They allow a lot more air in, but they do not clean the air very well,
not good for the engine.
