So I find myself in a situation where I needed to goose the throttle and get some power to the road. So I mashed the go pedal and nothing for about a second until the torque converter FINALLY locked up and put some ponies to the road. I'm thinking that the PCM has everything to do with not locking up the TC but maybe you guys can fill me in if that's not what did it. I figure its an easy fix by getting a programmer that will change a bunch of junk that controls the TC. Too bad I am not getting an SCT thingy until the warranty goes out. I guess I'll just have to hold off on jumping out into traffic until April of '09. Oh well I guess.

In my experience, it is the turbo not spooling up fast enough. You have to do a mini power-brake to get the turbo boost up (helps to have a guage too) and then mash the go peddle. Works like a charm for me when I need to jump into traffic. It's a lot cheaper then buying a new 6.4 twin turbo! That's why the put the extra turbo in I think.

from a dead stop ? the TC doesnt lock up...
even w/ a tuner the TC wont lock until 3rd gear at the earliest !

your issue is BOOST...spool it up a little, as greg says !

no boost the ecm is programmed to not build it or dump fuel till certain parameters are met.

the easiest way to help is DO NOT floor it. instead move the throttle pedal at a fast rate but not to fast and it will lurch and then boost will come on a bit quicker to help aviod the NO go blues.

the NATURE of a turbo is such that they basically dont make boost
on the bottom end...you gotta get exhaust flowing to spin the blades...
its called TURBO LAG...dont like it...buy a super charger (but then youll
loose power to the belt driving the super charger)

engineers long ago came up w/ vari-vane turbos to try and offset the
lag...but again its all based on AIR and the blades dont spin enough to
build boost til the exhaust is flowing GOOD...

leave more space (to pull out), plan our launches better or
power break it a little...

Welcome to the world of the Manual transmission PSD.
Low gear rockets to about 4 mph, then 1st, at about 10 mph, 2nd 25 mph, 3rd 40 mph, 4th 55 mph, then you start rolling in 5th.
On the good side, going up or down hills, the manual is fantastic. Easy on the brakes, and plenty of power to pull the hills with a heavy trailer or 5th wheel.

But will the turbo lag cause the truck to jerk really hard? I forgot to mention it but that is what happened. That's why I thought it had something to to with the TC. There very well could have been a pothole there but I don't remember for sure. I already knew about all of the turbo lag stuff, otherwise I wouldn't have put up this post if I knew that what happened was from the lag.

Not really... it really shouldn't engage hard enough to really jolt you. Unless you did some tranny work, it's not going to come on hard enough to clear stuff off the dash. If you're getting that, I'd suspect something's not happy, like a clutch pack or a solenoid sticking and not fully pulling in a gear. It should be a fairly smooth even transition, not a "bang".

Well it was a pretty good jolt. I guess I'll have to go out and punch it again a few times on good, smooth road and see if it does it again. Like I said, there could have been a pothole there but I don't remember. I don't know if it was just coincidence that I hit a pothole at the same time the truck started to launch but it could have happened. By the way, I did lose stuff off the dash and some cd's fell from where I had crammed them up in the visor.

How many miles you have? What does your tranny fluid look/smell like? Could be that your tranny fluid is gettin ready to retire. I've had problems with Ford A/T's not wanting to shift right or hold in between gears and a fluid filter change has cured the problem two different times, two different cars.
