Maxtor, Something sounds a little fishy to me. My long box 02 has a 38 gallon tank. (147L) When mine reaches 1/4 tank I can usually squeeze 28 gallons in it. When my fuel light comes on (around an 1/8 of a tank) I can squeeze in 32 gallons. The last 1/4 tank in mine is definitely the biggest part of the tank but nowhere near 16 gallons.

Hmmmm.... I guess I will just let it run down until the fuel light comes on, and see how much it takes.. Problem is, I always try to keep the tank full, to reduce the possibility of condensation in the tank. So when on a long trip, it would have to be where I can get fuel in a hurry if it gets critical. I am looking into buying a aluminum 100 gallon/tool box combo, to put into the bed for long trips, but have not found one locally that I can see. All the stores say they will have to order one, and I like to see and touch the items that I purchase. The best price so far is around $1,000. I have a local tank company that will build me a steel tank for around $600. , but I would worry about rust getting into the fuel later on.

No I haven't... I was gonna ask what the heck you were talking about, then I remembered your other post. I think once it gets a little warmer here, I'll do that. When I fill up, it takes me a while but I quit when I have fuel in the mouth of the filler neck, I've done it every time I fill up except once. I was sick, and needed a "sit down facility" and I didn't feel like screwing around for 10 minutes!

Did you do both on yours, or just the vent tube?

i did both of mine..the (yellow) VENT TUBE is the most critical one.

careful when you lower the tank (do it w/ a friend 'round to help)
and dont do it when the tank is FULL !

resist the temptation to use a jack in the MIDDLE of the tank...youll
flex the plastic tank and could damage the FUEL pick up "foot".

i use a long 2x10 and put it lenght wise under the tank and used a jack
to hold the tank up as i loosened the straps...then i slowly lowered the
jack...the board will support the tank and keep it the weight or the jack
from flexing the tank and damaging the in tank pickup.

all it take to drop the tank are the 4 bolts holding the skid plate (if you
have one), the bolts holding the TWO straps & removal of the filler
hose/clamp.

once the tank is down remove the sending unit/pickup and reach your
hand inside the (fairly empty tank) w/ a pair of pvc pipe cutters and
snip the YELLOW VENT...snip it pretty high...that will allow the
TUBE TO FULLY vent (rather then have to BURP when the fuel level
gets "high" in the tank)

your fill ups w/ be MUCH faster ! and the handle wont shut off so
soon !

the WHITE tube is the FILL tube...the yellow (smaller) tube is the vent.

heres a VIEW of the tubes inside the tank BEFORE HARPOONING -

and AFTER CUT (just the VENT is modified here)

And all that will get you about 0 more miles of cruising range. There is still going to be 16 Gallons more or less that you can't use in the tank. That is 295 miles of range you are missing out on!!

When your Miles to empty display hits 50 the Low fuel warning light will come on. You will have somewhere around 13/15 gallons of fuel left in the tank When the 25 miles to empty light comes on it will have somewhere around 11/13 gallons left in the tank. After next time you bring the truck to a stop and try to accelerate it will start to buck and act like it is running out of fuel.

If you were to fill it up exactly when the Miles to empty hits 50 it would only hold around 29 gallons!!

Technically no... you should gain some capacity... I'm surprised at the length of the tubes. Once your fuel level crosses the yellow pipe opening any further fuel will attempt to push fuel up the vent tube, hence mega burp, and you wear it.

I can see having some room at the top for expansion, but good grief there's a couple of gallons of dead air space there. I'm sure the total volume is 38 gal, but the usable space may only be 32 gal, counting the air space. You cut that air tube off, and now the fuel can go a lot further up, without barfing all over the place.

'splain to me why i can stuff 38 gallons in my tank if ive still got some
left in it ? (and my truck doesnt buck or hesitate when im low on fuel)...
i run it down inside of 20miles from empty on a regular basis...and ive
RARELY put less than 36 gallons in when i fill up.
