I was wondering if anyone has any experience with a 6.2 chevy diesel? My fire dept has a chance to get an old army truck for a real good deal.

Its a 86 m1008 1 1/4 ton truck, they are really tough trucks with a 6.2 th400 and dana 60 front and a 14 bolt rear with a detroit locker and 4.56 gears. Were gonna make it a grass fire rig and a good all around utility truck, but really dont know much about the diesel in it does anyone know anything about them??

Chevy diesel

 I worked with a guy at International that came from a Duramax certified shop. From what he said they are half decent common rail engines. Fuel injection pumps are common problems areas and also oil lubrication issues. I have worked on a few newer style and they are terrible in almost any area. Water pumps take all day and they just don't run the way they should, It's an oldy but a goody stands true for most diesels. The simpler they are the longer they last....

I had a 6.2, in a GMC Van. Purdy gutless 'til I put a 4" exhaust on.. turned up the fuel pump 1/4 turn, and a bigger air filter. Even then it was a 6 (maybe), on a 10 scale.

As I remember it (1983).. Water-pumps, Fuel pumps, Glow-plugs, Fluid leaks and 2 Transmissions...were the main issues.. in the 185K I put on it.

I also had some experience with'm in the Military.. Good 'Ol workhorse's they were... But more than normal maintenance, IMO.

Purdy Darn reliable though. They'd Fire-Up.....Might Smoke, Stink'n Leak but they'd "Gitr dun"

Well we went to look at the trucks they had to offer today and got a good one! Its a 86 1 1/4 ton chevy, not a bit of rust on it even has the factory paint on the frame. It was in the mid 20's this morning and the old girl fired right up with one cycle of the glow plugs. Its only got 33k miles, its gonna have a wonderful new life at the station cant wait to get it ready for the spring

;tu For what you guyz wana use her for.. I'd betcha she'l work out purdy good for ya.

One thing I would mention ? Watch that electrical connection on top of the Injector Pump (Roosa Master IIRC)(sic).. unless GM changed out the O rings & seal compounds, from 83 to 86.. they tended to dry up and leak fuel. 12v + #2 diesel (?) Not Good. And nowa dayz ULSC #2 ta boot.

Prolly nothing to worry about at all, but you Jogged my memory(s).. with this Post..:lmao

Her having an ARMY "Mil Spec" to her pedigree might have Bullet Proofed her some too.

Sorry no pics yet we still have to pick the truck up. Its about 2 hours from us and we didnt want to drive it that far with the 4.56 gears and 31" tires, it would have been a long slow bumpy ride. I'll post some pics when we get it next week its a super nice old army truck it even looks good olive green
