DIY Air Intake on a Saturn 2.2L

Can I put a large open air filter element on my 03 Saturn L200 2.2L engine? I was thinking of something like the DIY filter setup that many have on the PSD's. May have to find a filter with a smaller opening, but similar principle. I just don't know if the car will act crazy if the stock box is changed out (because it is a gasser, as opposed to a diesel).

p.s. There is more that enough room to put the NAPA 6637 in there.

It should work unless you have sensors attached to the airbox.

With my experience on MAF systems(5.0L) long as the air filter/element is forward of the sensors I don't see why not although turbulence could effect performance depending on the plumbing leading to the sensor/s,I say give it a shot
