I’ve read that problems with the 6.0L Power Stroke engine might be caused by Ford tweaking the engine to produce more horsepower and torque than the manufacturer intended. I also understand that Power Stroke engines mounting in E-series vans are tuned to produce less horsepower (235hp@3,300rpm) and torque (440lb/ft@2,000rpm) than those mounted in F-series trucks (325@3,300 and 570@2,000).

So, that leads me to wonder:

Have E-series owners had as many problems with the 6.0L Power Strokes as F-series owners?

If not, might be worthwhile to de-tune the engine in an F-series truck in order to forestall or eliminate future problems?

What effect would de-tuning the engine have on the vehicle’s towing capacity and fuel consumption?

Finally, has anyone on the forum de-tuned a Power Stroke or does anyone on the forum know of someone who has?

De tuned? No one has de tuned a 6.0 here. If anything they boost up the performance. Most of the loss of horsepower in the vans is due to the lack of an after cooler (no room) rather than any deliberate de tuning.

Dave: I know most discussion is about boosting the performance of the 6.0L. I just wanted to raise the issue of de-tuning the engine as a possible way to prevent problems and see what folks thought.

I also understand that there isn't as much room under the hood of the E-series vans for the after cooler, so Ford de-tuned the 6.0L to help keep them running cooler. Thus, the engine has less horsepower and lower torque. Have E-series owners experienced as the same problems with the 6.0L that some F-series owners have?

bushpilot: I can relate to your problem. I have the same problem.

Good idea but I don't know of anyone who would do that. Might be an idea but anyone who runs a 6.0 diesel super duty needs the power for workin'!
