D rated vs E rated Tires

It is time to get new tires. The tallest E rated tires that BFG makes for a 16" rim is 285/75. They sell 305s and 315s in a D rated tire. Do the E rated tires last any longer? I don't tow with this truck.

i dont know about lasting longer but the difference is the WEIGHT
rating (and side wall plys)...for me...i dont wanna be calculating what
i can tow/carry based on some tire thats rated at LESS than my truck.

i just squeeked out 70k miles from OE 265/75/16 E-rated bfg rugged trails....

fwiw -

I picked up replacement bfg rugged trails under 140 per tire (including mounting, balance,
life time rotation and road hazzard) from costco...i couldnt get the tire
in outlined white letter but for that price and "wear" length ill suffer just fine.

Load Range / Ply Rating / Load Pressure (psi)

D / 8 / 65
E /10 / 80
F / 12 / 95

no, they really don't.
they just carry more weight for given dimensions

for instance.. and I'm checking the company website as I post this, so the information is accurate..
LT285/75R16 3,305@65 in a "D" load range
LT285/75R16 3,750@80 in an "E"
and that's the same make and model tire, so the comparison is fair and accurate

used to be, in times well past, a 3/4 ton pickup (F250) would come with 8-ply or 8-ply rated tires in the case of radials, which became load range "D"
and a 1-ton (F350) would come with 10-plys or load range "E"
due to payload differences

well, now, somewhere along the line, some one got smart and most manufacturers are making load range E tires standard on both.

I guess it figures in to the "more is better" theory.

well, now, the industry is switching over to a load/speed index method, so you'll see tires rated like this

load range D = 122R
load range E = 126R

and the number doesn't correspond to anything weight-wise, it's just a numbering system that the Rubber Manufacturers Association developed.

So good luck with that.

from my experiences(i may be wrong), the e-rated should last a little longer then the d-rated, do too the difference in the rubber compound....from what i have seen, the e-rated tires will not have the same traction in severe weather conditions as the d-rated tires, even though they have the same tread pattern....now if you go up too the 305s or 315s, they should almost be the same weight carrying as the e-rated 285`s...they might not have the tread life as the e-rated, but will have better traction in the snow and wet weather....just my 2 cents....hope this helps

If you look at the specs, you can probably find 305 in D's that have a higher load rating than 265 E's, that came stock. I run 285 D Michelins in my truck, no issues. But I did wish the where E when I bought them, just for the just in case factor.

I ran the stock Rugged Trails on the rear for 40K, put some used Michelin road tires on the front and put the rugged trails off the front on the back for another 22K. Not a bad wearing tire. The caliche roads here really like to eat up rubber.

Yeah my D rated 285's are rated more than my E rated 265's were. That's why I setteled for the D's.

case basis then ! what good is it to have these ratings if the consumer
cant use 'em for comparison !?! this is getting as bad as buying a mattress !

like the UTQ ratings?
would work pretty good if they were all measured against the same tire...
but every tire maker gets to submit their own 100/B/B tire, so guess what?
it don't mean squat.....

i understood that the 100/b/b crap had become worthless...
but wasnt aware the LR ratings were not worthless (for the most part)
too !

i guess its just like all the other crap...obd2 (can/scan) etc...
bunch of legal eagles lookin' for loop holes !

Nearly every time you go up in size past 305 the tires will carry more weight per tire so you could get away with a D rated tire in a larger size. Discount tire will tell you the load weights of every tire.
