You've got my vote on that!
The last 3 CPS' I went through the mileage on the trucks was in the 90-129k range, thats'a lotta heat and vibration a small component like the CPS can handle. :)

Wow thanks for giving me somthing to worry about, I just rolled over 90k. I need to pick up a spare and keep it and the tools to switch them in the truck. Might as well be prepared.

WOW  CHP, I'd a bet some $$$ you'd a had one. :dunno
I thought I had a bad CPS and changed it out with my in-stock glove box unit  and it turned out to be some relays. Couple months later found stranded camper in parking lot down from my house, stopped to lend assistance and low and behold I diagnosed their PSD with CPS disease. Promptly retrieved the "used" CPS that was fine for the fella, and it was DEAD now -mad long story short, I hooked the guy up with my Ford parts guy and he was on his way the next day. :thumbs

UPDATE: Oh yea, that empty space in my glove box has since been filled with a NEW CPS ;tu

New (?) Problem?

In the last two weeks (oddly, warm thursdays...) My truck hasn't wanted to start at work. No tach reading when cranking.

After 10min wait, Bertha fires up again. So I'm thinking, CPS eminent failure, correct?

Well, since that time, she has started acting up again, especially on warmer afternoons or when engine is warm. Seems to start after about 10 minutes.

I'm not sure, since I have a brand-new CPS, that that is the problem... here are a couple of observations:

  • if I crank immediately after the wait to start light goes out, she won't start - I need to count to 10 or so after that, and even then it's becoming iffy
  • wait to start light (and, oddly corresponding chime (x5) does not come on during most of the failed attempts
  • cold starts seem to be fine (<55 deg F outside)
  • the oil pressure idiot gauge doesn't register until after ~1 sec. of cranking

Could this be a fuel pressure issue? GPR? Anyone have any ideas? Truck has new CPS, new alternators and new batteries. The starter sounds strong, she's just not kicking in!

I'm at work trying to get home, and would hate to have to get her towed to the stealer.

Just tried again, and no luck.

Hmmm, if your WTS light is NOT coming on, then its possible you have computer issues, or wiring harness issues. THe WTS light should ALWAYS come on, even if the engine is up to temp. It just will go out faster than if the engine was cold.

Warm engine = warm oil = lower oil pressures? Maybe HPOP not working right? Dont know why waiting a few extra seconds would make a difference tho.

For what its worth, my oil pressure gauge doesnt "come up" until the truck is fully running either, and I've never had starting issues.

So, of course, as we all know, the surest-fire way to get your vehicle running is to call your wife, wait 30 minutes for her to show up, and re-attempt to start the truck - the Wait to start light came on, and she fired up. (Wife took it well, thank goodness :thanks )

So I took it to the dealer and we talked for quite a while. There were no codes other than the ones related to the chip. He said the fuel pump sounded good, the GPR was the 'proper' one (not sure what he meant, possibly a TSB replacement... :dunno ), and could not think of any reason why the WTS light would function intermittently. He ran the scanner while the truck was running, and the ICP, MAP, BARO, PCM, etc. all were normal. All he could recommend was to return the chip to stock  and drive it that way for a month.
All pretty discouraging news, I must say.

Does anyone have any other ideas?

Does the "Water in fuel" light come on at startup? I've never seen it lit, wondering if it's burned out or something else...I drained the fuel bowl this morning before leaving for work.

Also, could it be possible that the ignition switch is to blame for this?
