you need to put some die in the system and use a freon/gas
"sniffer" to determine where the leak is so you can FIX it.

see if your local autozone, advanced auto or oreilly auto parts
has a sniffer to loan you.

autozone will loan you the 134a gauges AND the evacuation
pump that youll need to DIY this !

im guessing youre looking at a compressor (w/ clutch)...

autozone says: $194 (referb'd) or $249 (new)
for the compressor WITH the clutch !

if you could re-use that clutch you could
buy just the compressor for $283 (new) or $282 (referb'd)

the other options (possibly) is clutch ONLY
replacement for $155 or $98 (both new)

if it were mine id replace the compressor and
clutch and be done w/ it !

yep thats the clutch assembly looks like yer missing a part. I'd go with a new compressor and clutch. Fix it once and be done with it.

I've been looking at them prices and the best thing would be buying it as a set compressor and clutch. how much (ball park figure) will it cost to service the system if i replace the compressor myself... also its the clutch that came off the clutch pulley. it looks like the bolt just backed out and plate fell. so its a posibility that there is nothing wrong with the compressor dont want to replace it if its still good. another thing could i just get another bolt and re install the plate with the right spacers. im kinda on a budget.

the evacuation pump and 134a gauges are FREE for the loaning from autozone.

while youre there, i'd replace the fan/drive belt.

and you SHOULD replacethe orifice tube in the system (they tend to catch the debris
and they are critical to the balance & flow in the system)...the orifice tube is anywhere from 1.99
to 49 bucks (severe service) @ autozone.

the single alternator belt is 56 bucks.

its recommended that you flush the system (to wash any debris out)...
do NOT use water...there are special flush chemicals that should be used,
mixing the wrong fluids or oils can cause SPARKING inside the cooling system !

the a/c system Capacity without auxiliary climate control is 42.0 oz
of 134a & PAG Oil the new compressor should come w/ info that
tells you how much PAG oil is required.

if you have an auxiliary climate control (excursion rear a/c) then the
capacity is 68.0 oz

check your upper and lower coolant hoses while youre there (the lower
hose inparticular rubs against the steering control arm and can rub
a good size slit in the lower hose...even when you have the ford nylon
webbing over the hose)...ask me how i know ;)

fwiw if you lower radiator hose is rubbed, replace it and use the old hose to
wrap around the new one for some added "rub" protection. -->

Isn't there a wiki that says to use distilled water when flushing the system? If not, then what are the "special chemicals" you speak of?

We're looking at rehabilitating the dual evaporator system in our Excursion, which will include a new dryer unit, pull a vacuum and recharge. I'm optimistic of ice cubes coming from the vents:cold3 :sweet

I picked up a new Goodyear Gatorback belt from vatozone for $36 last week.

I'm liking your signature, chp. The google ads have about ruined a few of our "neighbors".
