After reading your upcoming adventure an option may be to install a prefilter.
Something on the frame that can be easily drained incase of crud.
My 96 is going through the clean out phase now and I have after market filters on it. They have a drain on the bottom. On the way back from KS I had to use it several times to keep me going as I could not get spare filters in time to take with me. After a few drainings, I had to remove the filter and shake the crap out of it. It can be removed and replaced without tools. Same filter setup Bean was using on his fuel systems. They are a little hard to get but not too expensive. I get them through Car Quest. The filters come in 5, 30 and 150 micron. and are part numer 86911, 86912 and 86913 respectfully. I do not recall the head number right now. I think NAPA has them as well, they are made my Wix. You can also get a heater and/or glass bowl kit for them. I think the heater kit is like 70 bucks.
I really like them except that they are not a stock item. Have plenty now as I ordered 3 of each!

Dangit! &#^#$ I just typed you a long reply and it posted 5 times! When I deleted it I lost all of them!
Anyway, consider a prefilter that can be drained or removed and cleand out with out tools.

Saved my butt as my 96 is going through crud clean out now. Drained a few time and then pulled the filter and shook the crap out and it kept going.
