Clunking upon deccel

sounds like a backlash in the rear end.


also when i had a u joint problem with at a stop switching between F and R u could hear a clunk and normally(with every bad ujoint ive ever expirenced) under accel u normally get a squealling type noise

Caleb 3CMotorsports.com If my memory is not failing me, didn't you say this truck has almost 300.000 on it. From what you are saying I think you need to pull the 3rd member and check for badly worn or broken gears.

just pull the diff cover off and see what's going on in the rear end.

If you have a LSD you may be seeing problmes with the limited slip.

Thats what we are going to do. It just started to jerk real bad when making a turn from being stopped. We think it is something with the locker back there.

There will be some movement, has to be backlash in the gears to allow for heat expansion. As long as the contact pattern is good, if the backlash is a little more than desired, it won't howl, yet anyway. Excess backlash would do like you saw, it also mean the pinion and ring gear aren't mesh as deep as they should be, they will wear faster this way, but as long as the contact is right they won't self destruct in a matter of seconds. Worth pulling the diff cover and taking a look, but don't condemn it just because it has some slop in it.

DUH just noticed your last post, now it sounds like you have some LS or spider gear problems too.
