To get the better sound all you have to do is get a piece of straight pipe to delete your muffler or get a walker btm muffler. Unless it's a cali truck it shouldn't have a cat on it in 01.

I don't know a part number for a walker muffler but other's on here do. All you have to do is go to a muffler shop and get a piece of pipe long enough to replace whatever you end up cutting of and some clamps. Depending on the shop you might get them to do the work for you.

any 3.5" or 4" aluminum piece of straight pipe (you can buy it at a muffler shop, online or a at a metal supply shop) its not too expensive. And either weld it in place if you have the capability or clamp it in place. I know people that have run no cat and i have done it before on some of my other trucks. The only thing i dont like is the interior drone when on the highway. Picked up maybe 1 mpg (if lucky). its been a while ago and i dont remember exactly. I did not do it for the mileage aspect of it i did it for the sound aspect of it. After about 6months and the cops getting pissed at me a muffler went on it.

The easiest way to eliminate the cat is to just get the piece of the exhaust system that Ford uses to eliminate it. Unbolt the cat, remove it, install the new pipe, fasten in place. Did it with mine. Seemed to have a bit more whistle to it after the kitty went bye bye. Don't know if it really gained any mpg, but I felt better about it. You might be able to find one in a junkyard or find someone that upgraded their exhaust system. I'm not sure if the 01 trucks are the same as my 02, but just thought it might help you out.

You can find the instructions to make you'r own intake in the wiki. That's what I did. I just tied the air temp. sensor along side of the filter. As long as it is close, it will be reading the temp. of the air that the filter is breathing in. If you do the DIY intake, the CCV mod and the zoodad mod are also very easy and cheap to do. You can also find the write ups in the wiki. The CCV mod will reroute your crank case vent so you don't have all that oil residue in you'r intake. The zoodad mod involves cutting a hole behind the grill along side of the radiator support to allow more airflow into the air filter.

the walker btm is also sold under napa house brand. it was actually cheaper than a straight pipe. its basically a flow through glass pack muffler- so my my thinking, its as good as a pipe and 'legal'.

EDIT: NAPA 21470/Walker BTM link here - NAPAONLINE®
