My Husqvarna model 51 chain saw is acting weird. Once I start it and rev it up it is fine. When I release the trigger the chain stops at idle. Then all of a sudden the chain starts moving again. This has never happened before.

Prior to this problem, I started it up and noticed smoke. I removed the plastic cover and saw years of sawdust/bar oil stuck to everything. I manually cleaned this up then sprayed brake cleaner to rinse it off. It started right up and doesn't smoke any more, but now I have the moving chain at idle.

Is my chain too tight? Is there a simple adjustment? Is it DANGEROUS to operate in this condition? The saw does drip a bit of oil too.

To tighten up the chain, you screw in the adjuster that is located where the bar goes into the block of the saw., You will need to loosen the two bolts/nuts that hold on the chain cover to perform this. Tighten up all before you start it up. I would guess your chain is too loose. You should not be able to pull the chain up from the middle of the bar more than 1/3 of an inch.

Start here: WELCOME TO HUSQVARNA - 1269

I've had this saw for 9 years since new. I've changed many chains and know how to tighten them. It's a brand new chain that is definately tight enough, BUT perhaps too tight? With the saw off I can manually move the chain in its track and when I pull it from the bar there is no drooping chain. :dunno The simple adjustment I'm looking for is not the screw to tighten the chain, but rather another adjustment to stop the chain from moving at idle.

it is possible the clutch is not disengaging when at idle....also could be idle is set to high....people do have a tendency to mess with the adjustments for the carb....hope this helps

Richard, I bet when you sprayed the brake cleaner in the clutch area you just made things a bit sticky is all. Run the piss out of it for awhile and the clutch will probably slip at idle again like it is supposed to.

I think you're right. If I had a compressor at home I would have used it instead of brake cleaner, but man it sure is clean.

atk - I didn't mess with the hi or low adjustment screw.

that is good that you didn`t mess with the adjustments....having worked in this field for a few years and worked with a guy that has 20 plus years in this field, i have seen what some people try to do.... ....anyway, 95 stroker may be right or it could be a broken spring in the clutch....either way probaly best to pull the sproket off and inspect the clutch and do repairs as needed....hope this helps....:D

i suggest the same thing... clean out the clutch area. easily trash can get in there and cause it not to disengage and grab intermittently. make sure springs are in good condition. clean thoroughly. should be fine. of course, check condition of clutch
