There is only 3 or 4 MAFF capable units & they can only be called upon when all other fire fighting air assets are committed & things are going from bad to worse if I remember right.

Big fires like these can create their own weather patterns independent from the other local weather patterns and the winds they create are unreal, like mini tornadoes & in some aspects worse than the winds associated with tornadoes.

Check out Wildland Fire: Home of the Wildland Firefighter for the latest info from wildland FF's

From a guy I know on another forum who lives out there

Interstate 15 has been closed from Temecula to MCAS Miramar since yesterday. That's a 45 mile stretch. Fallbrook residents were evacuated... no where to go north, south, or east... they were being escorted THROUGH Camp Pendleton by the Marines.

Well over 1,000 homes are gone in just the San Diego area. Over 500,000 people are evacuated (I heard one report that said 1m).

We have friends down south, all are safe but 1 of them has 4 families (17 victims) of the evacuations staying with them. Lucky they have a Big, Big house and acreage. They are going to start accepting RV's tomorrow. We've extended a welcome to anyone who might want to get away til' it's over.

Buddy, that's everthing that's RIGHT with America right there..

I just heard 800,000 people have been evacuated and more than 400,000 acres have been charred.

Information on XM247

From the XMSR wire;
WASHINGTON, Oct. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- As California wildfires force more than
500,000 residents to evacuate their homes, XM Satellite Radio is broadcasting
news updates and public safety information nationwide on its free, 24-hour
radio channel Emergency Alert (XM channel 247).

The Emergency Alert channel is broadcasting the latest information about the
wildfires from Southern California, including live, wall-to-wall reports from
news radio stations KOGO-AM San Diego and KFI-AM Los Angeles, information from
the Red Cross and AP Radio, and eyewitness accounts from people across the
region.

Additionally, XM is providing its 24-hour traffic and weather channels for
Los Angeles (XM channel 222) and San Diego(XM channel 223) for free to all XM
radios, and will continue to do so until the wildfires are contained. These
two channels offer round-the-clock information about traffic, evacuation
routes, and weather conditions for each metropolitan area.

The Emergency Alert channel is broadcast for free to all XM radios 365 days a
year. Anyone who has an XM receiver can tune into the Emergency Alert channel
for reports on storms, floods, fires, and other emergencies, even if they are
not XM subscribers. For instance, if you have an XM radio installed in your
car, but you do not subscribe to XM, you can still listen to the Emergency
Alert channel for no charge. Since the Emergency Alert channel airs 24 hours
a day, 7 days a week, it is located on XM channel 247.

Two have been confirmed, 1500 homes, and if I remember correctly, about 21 fire fighters have been injured and about 24 civilians.

Until the winds die down, not alot that can be done except the important thing, get the people out.

It's horrifying to see all the destruction. Hope they get some relief from the wind today as expected. They are getting alot of help from neighboring states which is great. Some from California came up to help us with ours. If they asked, I'd be down there in a heart beat.

Here is the Inciweb site link that has information about the fires in the country.

Interesting thing is that the Incident Commander on the California Fires is the same lady that was Commander in Ketchum with our major fire. She does a great job.

Talking with our SoCal friends that have taken people in this AM, even they (in the Temecula area) have been given Precautionary Notice to be Ready.. for anything.

Whats kinda Spooky is.. We're only about 100 miles north of all of this.. The Winds here are Dead Calm, not a Breath of air movement.

Mother Nature Rules with this kinda thing.

The local news channels have reporters On Scene, so we're getting live up-dates: This might get worse than it is already, due to the Aftermath, when it's over. All those dis-placed people with no where to live.

We WILL get through it though. I'm absolutely sure of that.

Big Joe,

Regardless of how far you are away, please make sure you at least have a good plan to get out if you need to. Even puting important papers in a single plastic baggy that you can grab quickly, pictures and albums in a duffle. It's easy to unpack if nothing happens, very difficult to put together if you only have a few moments.

Hope everything stays south of you.

I hear ya Barrett. my wife and I have been thru 4 Hurricanes & 3 Earthquakes..We keep ALL our important papers and things that are close to us in what we call our "Grab'n Go", Fire/Water-proof Box.

EVERYONE should do that. I'ts a good feeling to have, when things like this happen... that you know you are ready to leave with your Grab'n Go Box.

Just got off the phone with my buddies down south.. They caught 3 trucks with Mexican plates LOADED with relief supplies, fueling up to head back for the Border.. They Blocked them in and asked'm what the Hell they were doing ? they Bow'd up and acted like they were going to Ram their cars so they Flatened ALL 6 tires on their trucks !! SDPD pulled up and took it from there cuz someone had already called it in....:thumbs

Hope That makes the 6 O'clock News.. But it prolly won't:(

The Buzzards are beginning to circle.

The Governator should close the border crossing til' this is under control.
