On the way home today i started to smell a burnt smell. Didnt think much of it, figured it was just someone else in traffic. Well when i got out of the truck in the driveway i noticed the same smell. I followed the scent and it seemed to be coming from the front drivers side hub. Any ideas on what the problem could be? From what i was told the previous owner replaced one hub at around 70k miles and the other at about 90k miles and it has just over 104k miles on it now.

Now what's wrong with the truck this time?

Thanks,
Tim

Was the hub or hub assembly replaced?

Sounds like a wheel bearing - mine smelled burnt as well.

I meant to say that both of the hub assemblies were replaced by the 1st owner.

DynaTracs were on backorder last time I checked - you could be waiting for over a month!!! :tounge
If you don't have larger then 35" tires you probably don't need them.

If the hub assembly was isntalled correctly (bearings are inside in an internal case) they should be good to go for QUITE a while.

Personally I'd pull the wheel and inspect - you could have needle bearings, wheel bearings, rotors sticking etc... you need to pinpoint more so we can help you better!

On the ride in to work this morning i noticed an occasional clicking sound coming from the front d.side area. And also in stop and go traffic i did notice a fairly violent shaking/vibration coming from the front end somewhere. The steering wheel was vibrating along with this. But the violent shaking wasnt there on the way home. It did kind of vibrate a little bit though. And i did notice that the truck was pulling towards one side when i took my hands off of the steering wheel.

How can i inspect those items to see what the culprit is? Bearings, rotor sticking, etc... Any good signs to look for to help narrow it down?

And i do have 35" tires so the dynatrac kit will definately help if that turns out to be what the problem is.

Thanks,
Tim

Clicking? My money is on the WHEEL BEARINGS inside of the hub assembly. WIth 35" tires - you'll probably eat those things up at least once a year.

They are CAKE to replace - if you need help give me a shout 443 553 9234. You can do it ALL at home, and I'd suggest getting your WHEEL BEARING kit from www.powerstrokeshop.com - they got me ALL the parts/seals one day later and at about 200 bucks less then FOrd wanted to sell to me. This is of course you don't go with the DynaTrac kit. You may be able to nurse it for another month, but more then likely your brake is going to lock onto the rotor here soon.

I ended up biting the bullet and ordered the Dynatrac hub conversion kit from OffRoadUnlimited. They said that they have 3 in stock (now have 2) as of today. $1695 with free shipping if you order online.

From the pic i got from their website it doesnt look like it included the wheel studs that get pressed into the hub, or the ujoints, or the 4 knuckle to spindle studs either. Anything else that i should get to complete the installation?

Studs get them from the dealer - they're not pressed in. IF you can't figure out how to get them in since they're just studs with no nut or anything, gimme a call - 4435539234 it's too much to write on here and i'm about to head outside to hook up a car and leave for Florida.
