Burning oil

I just updated my profile for my stats. The only thing that is not on there is that I have an Edge Platinum . The other update is that while I was recently out of the concrete business the truck sat for almost a year. I have recently changed all the filters and the like.

My question is that it seems when the truck is idling and then excelerates afterwards it blows a lot of white smoke and then seems to clear up. I have noticed a lot of seepage from the turbo boots and would think that some of the burning oil smell due to that. I have given consideration that it may also be the EGR. I am just getting back to work and am trying to keep my cost down. If it is something that I can fix here it would be better for me.

How much have you driven the truck since it was sitting? Does the white smoke only occur when cold or is it after every start up when you first accelerate. What kind of fuel are you using in the truck (i.e. Low Sulphur Diesel - 500 ppm or Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel - 15 ppm)? Are you using an additive in the fuel and if so what kind? Has the truck had this problem before?

FYI - Do not let the truck sit for long periods of time. A long period of time would be considered anything over a week. You must drive the truck and get it up to operating temperature and exercise it, which includes and few good acceleration pulls i.e. highway onramps or stoplights. The turbo has moving vanes that stick when the soot builds up and condensation forms due to temperature changes. The same condensation issue with the EGR cooler. Condensation mixed with soot is not a good thing. Soot has sulphur in it and when mixed with water in the condensation creates sulphuric acid which can be corrosive to parts. The only way to prevent this is to drive the truck frequently.

Also use the best fuel you can find which means don't use 500 ppm highway or off highway (dyed) fuel. These trucks can run on 500 ppm diesel fuel but were really designed to work the best with the Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel - 15 ppm. Only buy from reputable fuel stations that move a lot of diesel fuel.

Also DO NOT idle the truck!!!! Idling gets you nowhere (literally). It will not keep the engine at the proper operating temp and will just produce soot from an inefficient burn cycle because the engine is not under a load. This soot is just drawn back into the EGR system where it builds up causing a failure of the EGR system components. Just so you know running the A/C in the summer is not a suitable load or reason to let the truck idle for long periods of time while waiting for someone to go in and buy lunch, pickup groceries, deposit a check in the bank or any other mundane tasks that only takes a few minutes.

The oil on the intercooler boots is normal to an extent due to the recirculation of Crankcase Vapors (CCV) through the air intake system. The oil does seep out over time and it could be that you are burning off some oil that has dripped down onto the engine due to long periods of sitting and it is now getting hot. Another reason not to idle the truck as well. These oil vapors find their way into the EGR system and create a sticky residue which the soot then sticks to creating even more of a mess, further complicating and accelerating your performance problems.

I do not have any experience with tuners so I can't tell you if your Edge tuner is contributing to the problem but I will warn you that not a lot of members on here like or use the Edge products with the exception of the Edge Insight which simply acts as a multiple gauge display without having individual gauges all over your dash and interior. My suggestion is that you drive the truck for a while without the Edge Tuner turned on and monitor the condition of the truck and take it from there.

Sorry for the long post, just wanted to give some insight into a few variables that you can try in an effort to see if there is anything wrong with the truck.

the truck literally sat for ONE year???

man, you could have a miriad of issues. but thanks to ponyx, he gave a lot of good information. :sweet

if i were you, i would take all that info and store it away for a bit. drive the truck. work out any 'little' kinks (perhaps the smoke issue will go away w/ frequent driving). deal w/ any other issues that may arise. you did say you changed the filters - and i hope you also changed the oil too!!?? if it say actually for that long, perhaps (if it were me) i would drain all the fuel and put in new. what to do w/ the old fuel?:dunno

perhaps paying for a new 'ford update' may help too - just to get it up to snuff.

i would also take a look at what 'could' need greasing if it has sat for that period of time.

if indeed the smoke issue does not go away after trying a few of these hints - maybe a doctor visit is in order OR just check back w/ us for more helpful hints/suggestions.

good luck - keep us informed;tu

I have been driving the truck since the first of the year. I have change the fuel filters, oil and oil filter. I really didn't know that the motor required ultra low. I have ran truck stop fuel lately but if I need to start shopping for the ultra low sulfer. I have experienced this smoke since I started running the truck. It smokes when it "idles" and then accerates; stop lights, hooking up the trailer, closing gates... I am running cetane, I will have to check out the name brand. I will let you know how things go this week and try what you guys have suggested. The reason I am running the the Edge is due to the fact that I have the turbo cooler, all the temperature guages and heads up displays. Also, I have ran a lot of miles in the programmer and it really does help with the milage and performance.
I know that I didn't do the truck any justice but I was able to keep my family afloat by going on the road driving a big truck; but here we all are a year later so sometimes the mechanics of a vehicle are over riden by placing food on the table and not loosing our house. I had looked into selling the truck but couold bring myself to selling a truck for less than half of what I purchased the truck 2 years previous.

Thanks again for your responses,
Rob

Update for everyone. I have been particular about only running ultra low sulfer, taken the programmer off and driven it hard. It has stopped smoking all together. Thanks for everyone helping me out.
