yep, fuel heater. I had the same issue and simply removed the heater. I plan to update it to a SD heater this fall but there is no rush. You need a crow's foot wrench to carefully remove the stand pipe and then remove the heater. It is plugged into the side of the canister. You will see how it is all connected when you get into it. It is very simple to remove but the stand pipe is plastic so be gentle with it.

correct, I have no heater and so far it has not made any difference. But then, when ambient temps are 100 I doubt it would ever come on anyway. I'll replace the heater this fall - too hot out now to work on it.

I honestly dont remember exactly how it was all attached but I seem to remember that once I removed the stand pipe the heater was attached. I think it either slips on or threads on from the bottom and then is held between the center nut on the pipe and the bowl that the pipe threads into.

No need to remove the filter bowl. Simply drain it and unscrew the stand pipe and the rest will be self-evident. Believe me, I dont have adequate tools and even less knowledge/understanding of these trucks and I did it with some help from these guys. Here is my thread from my experience. I did it without any trouble. I spent more time looking for a crow's foot wrench than I did working on the whole thing. Good luck; it's no sweat to do.

Gosh, my heater has been unhooked since before I owned the pickup and thats been nearly 4 years now. No troubles with fuel gelling here, and it does get cold in the winter.
