Ok guys and gals, I need some help bad. I need to replace or rebuild my trans. I experienced some weird things today with my girl and after all was said and done it comes out that the torque convertor is going. I am still able to drive her but the problem is getting worse. Oh, I guess I need to fill everybody in on what is happening. Today I put the trans in reverse but nothing happened for a few seconds and then all worked fine. This isn't the first time she has hesitated like this but it hasn't been but a couple of times. Well this has happened all day long and even in drive a couple of times. I also had to stop on a steep hill and when I took off the whole truck vibrated until I reached the top. I stopped by my local trans shop who is a long time family friend and he diagnosed it as the torque convertor but told me to rebuild the whole thing while I was in there. His price with labor and all was $1600. I can save even more if I pull it and take it to him. He said that he would install a bigger torque convertor by a company that starts with a P. Sorry I can't remember what he said but he did tell me that convertors is all this company does. He is aware of the banks six gun and said I would be fine but I'm not sure. I trust the guy and he has always done me great but that was on my C-4's and C-6's. I know these trans are different animals and I just want to make sure I will be fine before I do this. I believe the price is good and maybe a little to good but it is still alot of money. Now, what do I do, rebuild, replace or what.

Thanks
Scott

If the converter is gone or acting up naturally all the filings are throughout the transmission so it would be better to rebuild the trans with a new converter. $1600 doesn't sound bad to me alot of the replacement transmissions found on the internet are $3000-$4000 some with and some without converters. I have a triple disc converter in my BUILT 4R100 and it has been trouble free it also has alot less slippage than the stocker. The better the torque converter the longer the tranny will last.

I'm not really questioning the price as much as I am the newer technollogy. I guess I am asking if an old school trans guy can rebuild the newer trans. He has rebuilt many of the 4R100's but not any of the Torqueshifts.

I believe the torque shift trannys are basicly just an upgraded/updated version of the 4R100.

AW MAN scott, sorry to hear about your tranny troubles. i can feel your pain, and my pocket book does too.

that price does sound real good, i oppted to just replace mine with another OEM torqshift (5R110) from ford. it came with a 3year/75k warranty.

i really wanted to buy the ATS tranny, but 6grand was way too much.

i never got too see the internals, so i dont know if a re-build was in my future or not.

hope things work out for the best scott.

I put a deep pan and extra cooler on my 4R100 when I had it rebuilt and it helped the operating temps alot. (at least a 25 degree drop) I don't know about the torque shifts (5R110's) but there are all kinds of valvebody updates to do when rebuilding a 4R100.

Thanks for the info Stephen. I also found out the name of the convertors that my local shop uses. The name is Precision Industries. According to BTS site that Stephen posted, they use them as well. Has anybody heard or used them and if so what kind of info do you have? I would also like to know of any shift kits available, I only found the one on Suncoast's site.

Thanks
Scott
