Square D is about as good as they get. Remove your old one and take it to the electrical supply house and explain it to them. :)

My neighbor, the electrician, came over to check things out. He had to go to the book but we found that the aluminum wire that the guy that did the work used for going from the panel to the plug is 8 gauge.

According to the book, he should have used 6 gauge copper wire to handle the load rating of 50 amps.

My neighbor also told me that they should have installed a 60 amp breaker because the demands of the welder dictates a 125% increase to the rating of the breaker.

We are getting close!

 to the neighbor!

what welder are you running? i could not get your link to work. if its an inverter, then the 125% may not really apply. my v205 maxed out is happy on a 50A branch circuit.

I was thinking alum. wire and a small breaker thats whats in house hold welding most of the time. I have two millers 250 welders set up for steel and alum. spoolguns. I had to change the wiring out too so.

I would bet that you have a Sq. D QO pannel. The QO breakes are notorious for false trips (especaillly something with a surge load like a welder!). Just plan on replacing the breaker once in a while. They are cheap and easy to change.

Aluminum wire + welder + worn breaker = fire. I would hire or barter with the electrician to do a suitable [safe] upgrade. Eventually a worn breaker can develop a carbon arc that will conduct electricity even when the breaker blows.
