I just bought a 1999 350 with a 7.3. Love the truck but has an exhaust leak at manifold. It's n shop now..how much would that effect performance. Common sense say a lot since the turbo uses exhaust to work. Am I right. Thanks and again I am loving the sight Tons of knowledge her for sure

WELCOME Aboard ;tu;tu

Yer right. The exhaust drives the turbo compresser wheel that creates the boost pressure.. with any exhaust leak, pre turbo, yer loosing power/performance.

Yes I do. It has the three pod pillar set. I checked out normal readings and I'm right there. I'm a gear he's at heart. This my first diesel though. Not sure if its a 99 or 99.5. I'm guessing I can tell by the vin. It has 199000 miles. It is chipped but not sure which one

Good to go on the gauges. ;tu

The VIN will tell ya.. but if you know someone with a 99.5, 2K or a 01, 02... you can tell by the Turbo "Y" pipe design.. as compared to yours ?

If they're the same as yours.. it's a 99.5+.

Which one is better. Doesn't one have a better turbo. Wicked wheel or something

Very Simply Put ?.......

It's not so much which one is Better ? There were some subtle "Improvements" in mid year 99.. turbo and charge tube wise.. the 99 had what is now refered to as the "Wicked Wheel".. Stock. It whined/whistled.. average consumers did'n't like that.

Ford/IH changed out that turbo set-up on the 99.5, and up. It was quieter but has a Surge issue @ 15 to 1800.. rpms. Lots of us put the 99 turbo wheel on our 99.5's, and up. There is also some ECM/PCM programming differences.
