Howdy All,
I need to do the rear brakes on my F-350 SRW. When I priced the pads Orielly's wanted 67.99 (Wagner) for their life time pads, Autozone wanted 19.99 (didn't get the name). Why the price difference? What are y'all using?
Also, I have heard nightmares about taking the rear axle out to change the pads, is this true? Can the drums be taken off any other way? And lastly, any tips, tricks or short cuts to make the job easier would be greatly appreciated.

No, you can change them without removing the axle. You will have to remove the axle to do the drum parking brake. It isn't hard, you just need the proper axle nut socket and a good torque wrench. All of this is according to my DVD on my 2004 truck, but they are close enough.

you have rear drums so therefore your parking brake and service brakes are one in the same. its not like the 99 on up superdutys with disc rear service and the inner drum parking. all you do is jack it up take the rear tires off and slide the drums off. simple as that except you might have to do some taping with a hammer if the drum is rusted on at all. and as far as the brake shoes i wouldnt ever use something like that from autozone. go for the oriellys they are well worth it in the long run and you wont have the brake fade problems either.

Hey Craig, long time no see, been over here?
No they arent close. Yours has discs on the rear, ours have drums, the parking brake just uses levers and springs like other drum brakes. Use a flat screwdriver through the backing plate and turn the star wheel to loosen the brake from the drum, then use some pentrating oil around the axle flange where the drum goes around it and smack it good with a hammer right between the lug studs, that usually loosens them up enough to get em worked off. The difference in price is "lifetime". The zone has some too, but they are higher too. May want to buy both sets and take one back, cause they will probably ask you 3 inch or 3.5 inch, I don't know how to tell before you take em off.

I don't trust the duralast branded stuff that autozoo is pawning now (ps they are ripping you off my local store only wanted $16). If they had the Performance Friction then I'd say go for those, which is what I'm running up front on my truck right now.

Napa has some good shoes in their higher up line, unfortunately I don't remember what it's called. I really don't have a problem wearing out my rear shoes too fast so I'm not concerned with lifetime warranties especially on a wear part.

JDbones has a good point about the different widths unless you have a 2nd vehicle that you can use as a parts fetcher.

I stand corrected Johndeerebones, you are right they have drum brakes. I had thought that all Super Duties had disc rears. My mistake. I should look more closely.

happeetxn,

Do yourself a favor get some Powerslot rotors and Hawk LTS pads, you'll be amazed and the shorter stopping distances and the lack of fade too! I got them on mine and was so impressed wer now sell then at DPPI as a normal performance item. They'll cost you a little more but the no warpage and lack of fade and shorter stops is well worth it to me. If you have any questions call us.
