My uncle just got a 97 psd and it runs well except it blows whit smoke that smells like fuel. He took it to ford they had tested it for 4 hours and could figure out what the problem was. He seems to think it might be the IDM.. I don't know much about these older trucks. Any help would be appreciated...

there's not much different between his 7.3 and your 7.3 other than a few minor details.

I would start looking for UVC problems. Check compression and make sure his motor's not dusted.

Thats what I was thinking to. Could have valve trouble in one cylinder so it won't fire, but will be putting raw fuel into the exhaust too. If an injector is messed up it can dump fuel too. Could be more than one too.

i dont remember ever hearing or reading about valve troule with the 7.3.its definately possible though as it is with any engine.i just never heard about it or seen it myself.

my 95 needed a motor when i bought it.it had a cracked block and timing cover cuz someone filled it with straight water.but it was blowing white smoke.thought it was antifreeze till i got a good smell of diesel from the tailpipe.my UVCs were good except 1.but mine skipped like hell though.i sent the injectors to BDP to have them done up to a stage 1.all the plungers and barrels were junk in them.

and my most recent injector battle.it would blow white smoke lightly till it got hot then it would blow serious white smoke and run out of power then die.2 bad injectors and i still have atleast one more and still puffs white at idle.but runs pretty good otherwise.good enough to do a donut on dry pavement with ease.

My 97 is doing the same thing. Pulled my fuel filter and it is black with oil on it so I know my o rings are bad. I am thinking that my injectors are the problem for the white smoke. I will let you know in about a week when I get it back from the shop.
