might sound like a retarded question but just wondering, My truck 2005 didnt come w/ a block heater cord, just bought one yesterday off ebay, and our temps here dont typically get below 30-35 degrees. This week though we are having them in the teens w/ wind chills in single digits. I know to yall up north that probably sounds like florida weather but my question is.......... Does it hurt the engine at all starting at that temperature w/o being pluged in and that hell raising that goes on till it warms up? Thanks

It is a cost cutting measure. Ford figures that most people don't go out and chip their truck out of a block of ice, like Crumm, so you don't NEED a block heater. And if you do, you get to buy the cord.

Just my opinion but.... It wont "HURT" yer engine, in the sense yul tear something up right a way. But the prolonged cranking, unburnt fuel build-up and uneven stresses of 1 cylinder firing and others not.... then the time it takes for things to clear up.... In Time, could (probably WILL) take it's toll.

It's better, to Plug It In. A 15 amp Timer and a HD extension cord will save you a lot of grief, in time.

When to plug it in ? That's yer call. I plug mine in when I know the temps are going to be in the 30's, or below.

Synthetic motor oil makes the cold starts easier, and usually eliminates the "romps". Three hours is usually all that is need for a nice warm start, longer time being plugged in is a waste of electicity.
