well heres what happened, i took off soot trap and muffler, just ran striaght pipe, drove it like this for about 3 weeks, then truck starts to smoke black alot whenever i would get on it, so i put muffler and soot trap back on, smoke goes away after about a week of driving, well i decide about 3 months later to make some dual exhaust for my truck, but this time i take soot trap off, and run a magnaflo muffler, well about 3 or 4 weeks after driving truck its starting to smoke black again, doesnt matter what gear i take off in 1st
2nd, smokes quite abit looks like i have a chip or somthing, it also smokes when i get onit at any speed, i have a 05 f350 6spd, any ideas whats going on?

humm sounds strange...and i guess a lot might have to do
w/ your perception of what "smoke" is...

i know trucks that run w/out their CATS (aka soot traps) w/
either factory muffers or low restriction mufflers that dont smoke...
and i would think if youre gonna smoke you'd be doing it all
the time (w/ or w/out the soot trap)...youll see it w/out the
trap but my guess is youd still be smoking...that is to say
i dont know why it would start smoking 3 weeks after the cat's
removed...

what color is the smoke (blue, black, thick or just a haze?)
whens it occur....start up, heavy throttle, kick downs, mornings,
cold out...

hows the truck running ? idling ?
any codes or check engine lights (mil or cel) ?

where are you geographically ? california ?

i live in IL, temp is around 70s80s, the smoke is black hazy, like from take off in 2nd, if i almost kill engine and take off its a good cloud, if i take off in first smooth its kinda a think haze, if im driving with about 1500 rpm and get on it not full but 3/4 its a light haze, idle seems to be the same truck seems to be running ok, no lights on, mpg is doing good been roughly 18 to low 20 range, the thing is, first time i had straight pipe and once i put stock exhaust back on, the smoke went away completly... like i could bog engine down and floor it, it wouldnt smoke. so i know the exhaust is having this effect on it. truck is running rich for some reason i think, not sure? and i dont want to take it to dealer and tell them this. i scrapped stock muffler and stock exhaust, kept the soot trap. this doesnt make since to me... i know lots of diesels out there with not coverters, and mufflers and dont smoke.. does that info help any?

you should be ok to take it to the dealer w/ the soot trap/cat in place...
not sure what they might say if youve got no muffer (but i know most
dealers wont car about after market muffers).

the other reason you MIGHT not be seeing the smoke w/ the soot trap
in place is because it is designed to block the soot/smoke.

the only other suggestion / diagnostic that i could recommend is that
you check it for ANY codes (your generic obd2 code reader will not
get the outta-band FORD specific info or codes)...youd need something
like autoenginuity for that...i own & use the autoenginuity stuff and can
vouch for it...it is possible to have codes set but not have the
cel/mil light in the dash illuminated (its happend to me personally).
