Question Black Smoke??

Ok here is the deal i have a 2003 6.0L diesel and the modification it has is straightpipe (no cat) and the other day i was pulling onto the interstate and i put it to the floor to get ahead of this car that was baring down on me through the acceleration in first gear i saw a huge plume of black smoke behind me and just today i was leaving work and i decided to wind it up and do it again to see if the smoke just couldve been lose soot well at half throttle i could see another trail of smoke and the pickup wasnt under any load so is this something i should be worried about?

Has the EGR Valve ever been serviced? It may be sticking. How old are the fuel filters? How is the truck normally driven?

I know these may sound like odd questions, but I have noticed with mine, that when the fuel filters get near the 10k mile mark, I see a difference in performance and I start to get a light film of soot on the rear quarterpanel. I change fuel filters at 10k. Had the truck been driven "in town and slowly (grocery getter,socker mom)" driving style? When my wife drives mine in town to get the kids from school and run arrends, for a while, and I then drive it to work (30 mile commute half interstate) I notice the performance is down somwhat, and when I get on the interstate it will leave a haze the first few times. Then it will clear up and not do it till it is "the mom-mobile" again. I have also noticed recently with mine, I believe the EGR needs cleaned, If it idles for a few minutes, (like running into a gas station for a coke) the first couple of times, the turbo lags and will blow some black smoke throught first gear till the turbo spools up. I think the valve is strating to carbon up and is not operating at 100%. After the first couple of restarts it will clear up and not do it till it idles again.

it must have some kind of programmer/chip in it to be doing that... unless it isn't as mush smoke as im thinking... in that case it could be the EGR but with that you should notice that it is a little sluggish i would think

My truck did that and had to put in a new pcm. Only did it under a load. I'd look at removing the tuner if you have one, Could be a injector thats messed up or a EGR to.

All I see in the "grocery getter" senario is a light hase, it is hard to see in the day, it is just a puff at first, at night I see the hase in the lights behind me, and it only does is once or twice.

In the idle senario, it is just on startup and not heavy at all, I think it is a dirty EGR causing that.

I have no tuners, the truck, and engine is 100% stock except a FUMOTO Oil drain valve, and an XM Radio inside. It does everything the way it is, don't plan on doing any mods except a pyro and boost guage......

Mine was dong the same thing and it turns out my FICM decided to take a dump. If the check engine light is on I would go get it checked and its about an $800 repair at the dealer because I type this my truck is in a service bay getting fixed.

yeah. when my egr was sticking it smoked like a truck with big injectors.. kinda cool just didnt spool turbo very quick
