What does everyone filter their biodiesel for their final filtering with ,micron wise? I have made some and would like to try it in my dmax but also was wondering if washing was completely needed for this, cause when I tried the washing on a small batch the water started out filtering down through the fuel but after a while the fuel became cloudy again? thanks for the help. lee

1 micron...

Yes, you do need to wash your fuel. I tried filtering some un-washed fuel ONCE, it clogged my filter within 1 gallon.

The reason your fuel looked cloudy after the wash cycle was suspended water. Once you complete washing (when the water comes out like it went in -- perfectly clear, neutral PH), you need to then dry the fuel. This should make your fuel crystal clear. I was easily able to see the bottom of a 55 gallon drum through that fuel.

10 micron after washing and during the drying cycle.
Drier recircs through 10 micron spin on at 130 deg F.

Oh thats what I have been filtering on my processor with so should I put my 10 micron filter on the wash/dry tank? I pour my oil through some nylons before I put it in my processor. 1 micron seems really tight I know that caterpillar uses 4 micron on their fuel filters but I am wondering where I get a 1 micron filter?

You will have a hard time getting oil through the 1 micron via gravity even heated, did you mean Biodiesel?

I'm gravity feeding my veggie oil through that, not fast by any means, but works pretty nice. I just setup my pump to fill the sock -- more than a trickle. but not a full stream, either -- and let it go. Takes about 1 hour to get 55 gallons through.

I've run probably 300 gallons so far, seems like it's going to last a long time. This filter is HUGE! I think it could hold a bit of contaminants before needing replaced. I can see some junk in the bottom, but it hasn't affected flow yet..

yeah I ment filtering the biodiesel through after the process, then putting it into my tank to burn.

I also "Cold Filter" my Finished Biodiesel when taking it from storage to Vehicle. Very helpful especially during the colder months.
Even though the thicker stuff at cooler temps has more BTU, this cold filtering helps avoid filter clogging on the veh due to lower temps.
Also try not to suck every last drop out of the storage barrels, never know what settled out during storage, water glycerol (should not be any!), heavier fuel.
