Started my truck this morning and after idling for about 10 minutes I noticed about 1-2 quarts worth of oil that had leaked out. I tried to see where it was coming from but can't put my finger on it. Its coming from somewhere around the oil filter housing...but not the cap. It only leaks when running. Could this be an oil pump issue? Also, its running down the bell housing and dripping primarily towards the passenger side of the truck if this helps. Not sure if this is related but My truck has been hard to start lately. Any ideas? 2003 6.0 f250

My HPOP had an oring go that caused me to lose all of my oil going down the highway. Mine's a 7.3 but I would think things would be similar. At least take a look there. Good luck.

I just had my truck in the shop at the beginning of the week for this. What they did; add dye to the oil and drove it for 50 miles. What they found; Did a 'blacklight' inspection and found that the oil filter housing 'O' ring was fubar AND the factory plastic oil filter cap was 'misting' oil while the vehicle was running. This deposits a bunch of oil up on top of the engine, which then blows/flows down the back of the engine and generally coats the pan, tranny and cross-member and ofcourse, your driveway. :rant

if you attempt this repair on your back your a bigger man then me. i have changed a lot of these sensors and they are a pain in the ass. there is no way that i would try on my back. on a 03 and early 04 6.0l you have to get to it from the bottom and the sensor is on the driver side of the turbo behind the ipr solenoid. if you want to try you will need to take the front of the front driveline off. remove shift cable from transmission reach to the top of the engine and remove a silver shield that is held on by three bolts and then you need a 1 1/16 wrench that you will have to cut off to make a custom wrench to get it off. you also need to replace the connector or you will have surging issues or stall concerns. for your time and the pain that it will cause take it to the shop for this repair.

Jimn8or,
That is the exact problem. I couldn't see it until I climbed onto the motor and looked at the backside of the oil filter housing and thats where it was coming from. I have had this problem before and Ford replaced the cap and it stopped leaking. Do you think the cap is bad again? The cap was replaced less than a year ago. I also just replaced the O-ring and it seemed to slow the leak down but not completely. Could the housing be messed up?

It's a long shot but the housing could be warped. How tight did you put the cap on?
