Working WITH the trucks is also a good tip! Most of those guys are pro's, and simply need to know what you are going to do.

Be safe!

yup!!truckers are your friends on the highways.get a CB,put it on 19 and run with the trucks.good conversations to be had with truckers while the family is asleep as well.

Thanks guys;

I-81 sounds like the ticket. Only four months to go, before starting our trip. I feel so good about 2008.

Thanks again to everyone.

If you are planning on being back to Redding before November, you shouldn't have a problem with snow in NY. You will probably be leaving the North East before the leaves start to turn.

The problem w/ i81 isnt that "you" working w/ the trucks...its that
OTHERS DONT WORK W/ THE TRUCKS.

w/ Only 2 lanes on MOST if i81 it doesnt take much to shut it down...
for HOURS !

Hey Bush;

Almost anything is worth missing the cities. If I-81 is shut down for hours, we have a nice comfortable bed in the 5th wheel, plus we will not be in a rush. While we are waiting for the road to clear, the wife can be fixing up some good food. A good motto for us is,,, If life gives you lemons, make lemonade.

Max.. When you get to the I-81 part of yer journey (?) you might wana think about make'n that Lemonade and enjoying it along the Blue Ridge Parkway/Appalachian Trail.;) :).

We took in 4 days of it on our last trip. Got on it at Roanoke, back on I-81 at Front Royal.

Life Time Memories, Pics & DVDs. Can't be described. Gota see it for yourselves. (les you've seen it already)

<i81> is absolutely a beautiful <albeit un-predictable> run....
north of the tenn. line, thru virginia is very scenic...i used to live
in the winchester (va) area.

the virginia troopers are ball busters...its almost comical to watch
every one back it down to no more than 72mph once they hit
that southern virginia state line (posted limit is 65mph).

expect to encounter LOTS of instant on (pulse) radar...and radar
detectors are illegal in virginia.

used to be maryland was the ball busters (and theyre still hard
asses when it comes to speeding)...but the virginia troopers have
made maryland look like a cake walk anymore.

some of the cheapest fuel in the country can be obtain in the
southern virgina (wytheville) area... Flying J: Current Diesel Fuel Prices for VIRGINIA

the BRP (blue ridge parkway) & "the drive" (skyline drive) should NOT
be missed (but its not a great place to be towing, heavy)

both the BRP & "the drive" are just EAST of i81 (running parallel)
route 11 is just west of i81 (also running parallel)

so if you wanna jump off and experiance the brp or skyline drive
i TOO highly recommend it...even rt. 11 is nice (but youll go thru
LOTS of small towns)

Thanks Bush;

That is just what we like, "going through small towns" There is so much to see. I will be driving about 60 mph or slower. Out here in California, the speed limit for pulling a 5th wheel is 55, but they give you a 5 mph leeway.
So at 60 mph they never bother you.
Is it the same way out East?

others will chime in here as well, im sure... BUT
as far as i know theres no reduced speed for trailers...for 18wheelers
YES there is but not as far as i know <in virginia> for travel trailers etc.

for all the "towing" ive done back and forth hauling cars and household
goods between houston & virginia i far exceeded the posted limits (except
in virginia) w/out an issue.

when i hit the virginia line, going north...i immediately shut it down
to a cruise control REGULATED 72mph (and RARELY was there any
passing goin' on)...even the tractor trailers that i was "traveling w/"
backed it down @ the state line.

route 11 <from harrisonburg, va to kernstown, va> would provide
you w/ a NICE small town ride...lots of 1stop light towns <and most of those
are BLINKING stop-lights> ;)

as you get closer, revisit this a little and ill point out the REAL <local>
ball busters <for speeding>...shenandoah county, va being the TOP of
the list.

remember virginia is the state that instituted a HEAVIER fine (3000+ bucks)
for speeding to its own state licensed drivers !
