Hey gents, I hear from a reputable source that this is the new place to come for Ford problems :sweet . My grandpa has a late '02 F250 with the 7.3 powerstroke. When towing with it the fan clutch will come on and the belt will start to squeal. If I let off the the go peddle and let the rpm's decrease it will stop, but then I have to drive so slow that it takes forever to get places. I figure it's a bad tensioner or some such thing because the belt is in great condition, not being glazed and such and it only does it when that massive fan comes on. He doesn't seem to think that it's a problem, but I don't want to have his rig stranded in the middle of nowhere with a missing belt... Any advice on this one?

Ford had a TSB on that. They changed the water pump/fan pully and the belt I think.

Belt ease

dieseld,

I'd try some belt ease first. See how long that works. If memory serves me right the tensioner has no adjustment so either it's tight enough,... or not. Second thing (drawing at straws here, we need more info on your truck), I'd ensure the water pump wasn't going bad. Make sure there is no play in the pump shaft. If the shaft is able to dieviate even a little, it will "polish" the smoth side of the belt and it will squeak. Good luck. :sweet

I was under the impression that the belt tensioner was either tight or not. I'm almost positive that the water pump is good, no slop in the bearings. My grandpa asked the dealer he bought it from about it and guess what the answer was. The famous that's normal for a diesel engine and Ford notes no problems of this nature... and of course throw in the "it's just like a truck, they make funny noises too". Of course in his mind his "buddy" Jake would never lie to him, even though we found out later the pickup was a crash rebuild. It was rebuilt good, but was sold for a premium... The pickup is a crew cab short bed, auto tranny, 4x4, 7.3 powerstroke, with 60K on it now. Is there somewhere I can look up for TSB's? I'll go over everything next time it's around the place.

16518 2000-2003 F-350 DUAL REAR WHEEL, F-450/550, ALL WITH 7.3L DIESEL - ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT SQUEAL
SOME 2000-2003 F350 DUAL REAR WHEEL, F-450/550 VEHICLES, ALL EQUIPPED WITH 7.3L ENGINE, MAY EXHIBIT A LOUD SQUEALING NOISE FROM THE ENGINE AREA WHEN THE ENGINE FAN CLUTCH IS ENGAGED WHILE OPERATED IN HOT DUSTY CLIMATES. THIS MAY BE DUE TO AN ACCUMULATION OF DUST ON THE BACKSIDE OF THE ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT CAUSING THE BELT TO SLIP. THIS CONDITION HAS BEEN MISDIAGNOSED AS A TURBO CHARGER OR FAN CLUTCH ASSEMBLY DUE TO NOISE AND/OR FAST FAN CLUTCH CYCLING. TO SERVICE THE SINGLE ALTERNATOR APPLICATION USE SERVICE KIT 2C3Z-8620-AA AND FOR DUAL ALTERNATOR APPLICATION USE 2C3Z-8620-BA.

15888 FEAD BELT SQUEAL ON 7.3L
SOME 1999-2002 SUPER DUTY F-SERIES AND EXCURSION 7.3L DIESEL MAY EXHIBIT A FEAD BELT SQUEAL. THIS MAY BE DUE TO THE POWER STEERING PUMP PULLEY BEING OVER-PRESSED ONTO THE PUMP SHAFT. THE PULLEY MAY BE ADJUSTED AS FOLLOWS: INSPECT THE POWER STEERING PULLEY TO DETERMINE IF IT IS EXACTLY FLUSH WITH THE END OF THE PUMP SHAFT. IF THE PULLEY IS NOT FLUSH WITH THE PUMP SHAFT REMOVE THE FEAD BELT FROM THE POWER STEERING PULLEY. USING SERVICE TOOL 211- 016 AND 211-185, POSITION THE POWER STEERING PULLEY EXACTLY FLUSH WITH PUMP SHAFT. REFER TO THE SHOP MANUAL IN THE POWER STEERING SECTION UNDER PUMP FOR DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS. RE-INSTALL THE FEAD BELT. NOTE: IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO REPLACE THE FEAD BELT. A SHORT CHIRP MAY STILL BE HEARD AT ENGINE SHUT DOWN, THIS IS A NORMAL CHARACTERISTIC OF THE 7.3L SYSTEM.
