Diesel take the tailgate off and drive around I imagine that you'll find that the noise is coming from the tailgate and this little experiment is easy and costs you nothing other than the diesel to drive around.

I'll give it a shot, thanks for the idea. if that does solve the problem what do I have to do? I imagine new bumpers for the tailgate but I might be wrong...

if it's the tailgate there are many plastic pieces that get brittle over time and break off leaving nothing. They are at the two hinge points and possibly at the strikers if yours originally were plastic sleeved and of course the rubber bumpers for the tailgate.

LMC Truck has a pretty good selection of the pieces you need and cheaper than the dealer

thanks for the help, when I drive to work tonight I'll take off the tail gate and give it a shot.
