Over the last two weeks my battery light flashes intermintently and the gauge will spike to 16-18v. Does anyone know what this is. There are no adverse effects on my truck (i.e. shutting off, losing power).

Could my alternator be surging? My headlights will brighten when this happens.

w/ a voltage increase i would completely expect your headlights
to brighten up.

if its intermitant its gonna be hard to diagnose...take the truck
to autozone...have 'em test load test the alternator and both
batteries...

Battery light on/off

Just got a phone call from the wife that the battery light started illuminating randomly this morning. Alternator is new(maybe 3 weeks old) both batteries new(November 2007) all cabling on and secure,no battery acid visible on top of the batteries.

Probably have to run it by autozone today to get the alternator and batts load tested as mentioned.

i have 2 cents on a bad alternator, it may pass a test over and over again if its happening intermittantly.

I 2nd or 3rd the alt is bad.

The over the counter ones will test good and then not work on the truck.

We had one that drained the batteries and the alt was so hot you could not touch it. It did this the same day we installed it. We took it back and tested it and it passed. They gave us another one and it worked.

My brothers truck has the same spike problem and it will drain the batteries from time to time. He is going find another supplier to see if they are any better.

I had the same problem w/ the original alt. I was in a bind and had to buy one
from auto zone and 2 months later went to start my truck 10 min. after killing it and it was dead. Brought it back and the alt was dead. So, I'd get an alt. from napa or ford.
