Bad Torque Converter??

Hey,

What are the signs a Torque Converter is going bad? I have had a mechanic tell me that this is a possible reason why my engine is slowly going quiet until I tap the gas and then the normal chug comes back for a few seconds. Although it doesn't make a lot of sense to me, I'm not anywhere close to a mechanic, just wanting some more info.
