bad mileage?

here's the deal, I get around 13 mpg w/ truck unloaded, and around 9 mpg towing my boat. I'm not really a leadfoot and the motor is stock except a Dr. Performance chip, and K&N Intake. I have unpluged the chip for several tanks of fuel with no change. I am checking mileage at the pump, not the lie-o-meter overhead.

Here's the specs: 2000 f-350 7.3 liter 4x4 305/75/r16 tires

Let me know if I forgot any info, but does anybody have any suggestions on what to check, or upgrade for more reasonable mileage? Thanks

Air & Fuel Filters clean ? What rear end gear ratio ?

Dont know about yours but 2000 RPM is the magic number for mine, if I stay at or under I get around 18mpg on the highway whether towing or not maybe give that a try. With 3.73 ratio and 285/75R16s that gets me close to 70mph.

I think it's the tires.
Mine was getting like 11 one winter and I did a whole buncha maintenance/improvements and when I finally broke down and put a chip in it, that was the magic ticket.

But a 305 is a wide-ass tire; That's a lot of drag.
Best thing for fuel economy would be a 235/85R16

also winter fuel gives you terrible mpg numbers as well. JL you have a chip?!?! which one????

def the tires. while they are the same height as a 285, they are wider...thats heavy...get some ligher tires on there and that should drastically help.

I dont know about the fuel you get, but mine does'nt change with winter fuel maybe here in Alaska we get a better grade of fuel.

I dont know. maybe you never get summer blend up there so your always running the same mpgs. because I get your mpgs in the winter.

Just watch your Load Range Rating on the tires. You need at least load range D for light towing and use, but you need load range E for normal usage.
