bad fuel level sending unit?

When I switched to my rear tank the other day the needle went WAY past F. Now, several days later, it is still there. Do I have a bad rear tank level sender?


It is further than the picture really indicates - took it with my blackberry.

yes bad sending unit.but possibly a bad connection in the plugs on top of it,the plug on the selector valve,broken wire going to that tank or a bad ground.

lovely. especially now that I have moved 400 miles from the guy that put the new one in. Just great. How can I go about checking for the various connections? Is that something I can do as a novice with virtually no proper tools?

Mine did this for a while and it has quit. Mine might have been a loose connection.

After my veg oil conversion my front tank needle stuck like yours. Dropped the tank and slightly rotated sender. It was manually stuck.

Recently it did it again but quit too by itself. Peter, just don't run the tank dry! :eek:

Both of my tanks were doing it, when I did the filler neck mod on them I dropped them both a pulled the senders, I increases the tension to the carbon pile in the sender and cleaned off the film with carb cleaner then brake cleaner. They both work great now. More resistance in the circuit equals F, less equals E, so bad ground or connection does that, or an open in a wire.

Thanks guys, probably explains why my rear tank is running out with still about an 8th of a tank showing on the gauge. Increased resistance as a result of old age !!

I guess there is no simple way to get to the wires for the rear tank is there? I rolled around beneath it over the weekend and a fly could hardly squeak in between the tank and the bed. I guess I'll call the guy that put it in and see what magic he can suggest.

The sender is on the front center of the tank, ie directly over the rear differential. Unless you have sausage finger you should be able to fish em out.

If you have air tools it is easy to let the front of the tank down a little to get to it. Loosen the two top straps, the nuts are into crossmember at same location as above, and loosen the bolts enough to drop it a little for access. You should be able to get at it without doing that though, just poke around and you'll feel the connector.
